Football In The SnowPosted Thursday, September 22, 2011, at 2:52 PM
I played a high school football game in the snow in October of 1951 and recall it was our homecoming game and couldn't see the goal posts at the opposite end of the field when we kicked off to start the game. Five minutes into the game everyone on both teams were wearing solid white uniforms.
As sports editor of the T-G I recall covering one game with some snow on the ground (not as much as in 1951) and snow was falling off and on during that game. Can you recall any games Shelbyville or Cascade (and this can include Wartrace before it joined with Bell Buckle to form Cascade) played in snow or during snow showers? Bo, remember the bowl game Shelbyville played in, I believe, Hartsville? It didn't snow but you could see ice crystals falling. I believe that was the coldest game we ever attended. We left the car running and the heater on the whole game. Dad, a couple of our kinfolks and I went and we took turns sitting in the car to get warm, we stood on the side line the whole game. Also, Lawrenceburg was a cold place. I recall a Shelbyville game, late 50's, when it was spitting snow and the wind was pulling through that draw. I had on about all the clothes I could get on and I thought I was going to freeze before that game was over.
I went to THS and I was at that game, and yes it was cold and snowing.
David, you are correct. Shelbyville did play in the snow in the Lions Bowl against Antioch in 1977. It was the Thursday night one week before Thanksgiving. Frankie Mays returned an interception 100 yds. to put Shelbyville ahead 10-7 which would be the final score. I believe the temperature hovered around 20 degrees that night.
Shelbyville played in snow in the Lions Bowl in Tullahoma in, I think, November 1977.
