Bowl Games and Championships

Posted Friday, January 13, 2012, at 3:01 PM

I've been on record for many years as saying college football bowl games too often show only which teams can play best after a layoff of one month or longer.

We saw a lot of that in our latest round of bowl games including the one for the national championship.

Do you think one step toward a championship playoff would be to start the playoffs the week following conclusion of regular season play?

Another problem may be, and big money programs will hate this, teams simply play one or two games too many in regular season.

Let's face facts here. Too many schools simply purchase a game or two a season to improve their record by having smaller schools with weaker programs come in to get trounced and leave with a big paycheck.

Do we need to forget the magic of the New Year's Day time frame for one post-season game as a starting point and let teams designated by some method as championship contenders begin play the Saturday after conclusion of regular season play.

The playoff system sounds good, but I can imagine a myriad of logistics questions that need to resolved before that could take place.

I am sure someone will look at the financial side of how well these games will be attended, so are you thinking the bowl winners go to another playoff that then continues until it is narrowed to two or....?

I would prefer eight teams go into playoff system for the college championship and start the playoff the week after regular season ends. That would make the eventual champion and runner-up play another three games beyond. Teams not in the playoff system could play bowl games as usual.
