Gratefully, I have not had an incident occur where I would have shot someone.
To answer the second question, if I were in such a situation where my family or even innocent bystanders were in imminent threat of death or serious injury, I would shoot without hesitation.
While I believe I am a decent shot, I would not try to "shoot the hand", arm or leg. In those extreme situations, I would go for the biggest target, the main body.
If that killed them, so be it. My condolences to their next of kin or loved ones.
I have been robbed, but never been in the situation where I thought shooting was needed. I don't think we should shoot someone for stealing "stuff". Armed robbery however, is a different story. If lives are being threatened, then deadly force can be used as needed. Like Steve said, I shoot for the largest target. I would not continue firing in order to kill once the threat was neutralized.
if someone breaks into my house, even just to steal I am not going to wait to see if they have a gun or not. So basically if you do not want to get shot don't break into my house.
I have always had the belief that if I have to pull a gun on someone for fear of my own life, I should shoot to kill.I just hope I never have to do it.
