Smile, you're on Virtual Earth!

Posted Sunday, August 19, 2007, at 8:15 AM

I was doing some early morning browsing and discovered that Microsoft has posted very high quality aerial imagery of Bedford County on their Virtual Earth site, which is their version of Google Earth. They call it a "bird's eye view," and the detail is stunning.

You start at the Celebration grounds and can explore from there. I zoomed in on the Times-Gazette parking lot and was able to easily identify my co-worker's cars. The imagery must have been shot this past winter, due to the presence of a new car belonging to one of our employees that is parked in his regular spot.

One drawback is that you can't zoom out too far to go to other parts of the county quickly.

Another drawback is that the imagery is so good, I would think that the folks handling the security for the Celebration might have a problem with this type of detailed information getting out there for anybody to see. The number of people that attend the horse show would be a tasty target for those wanting to do great harm.

I didn't know that any other versions of Google Earth with different companies were available, and since I've found Google Earth, I found it to be very interesting, as I did this blog! Thanks for the info.

This is really neat..and yes it is a very close-up view. But you can tell more about how old the view is by scanning backwards from the Horseshow grounds to the Blue Ribbon Pwy intersection where they have been building the condos for around 2 years now..if you scan forward down the road the condos are on you will see Eakin Elem. and the Park Complex a little further down.

Thanks I enjoyed playing with this :>)

Be sure to change the direction of your view from north, to west, etc. The images were shot at all four angles and at different resolution. Some of it is so detailed that I could even read the clock on the courthouse! [12:40 pm]. They have been shot within the last six to eight months. The widening of N. Main in front of the old Renegar's is done.

Kind of scary. You can type in your own address and see your house!

Do you think it is possible that different views (like in different sections of Shelbyville may be older?)

The reason I ask this is when I view my house the pool and mini barn are missing from the backyard and they really should be there..but I also see were you are talking about at the intersection.. just kind of makes me wonder.

It's possible, but many of them seem to have been shot on the same day.
