Where's Tal?Posted Thursday, February 14, 2008, at 8:50 AM
While I was disappointed that Led Zeppelin isn't on the line up for this year's Bonnaroo [at least, not yet] there was another omission that perplexed me.
Where's Tal Wilkenfeld?
I first heard of this incredible artist a couple of months ago while watching the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival on PBS. Jeff Beck took the stage with his typical touring partner, drumming legend Vinnie Colaiuta and this little gal carrying a bass guitar almost as large as she is.
Bands change their line ups all the time these days, so a new member wasn't unusual, except she looked to be about 16 or so. [She's 21.]
Beck cranked up "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" and half way through, let the young lady take over.
She tore it up.
You can see the clip on her MySpace page and hear some samples from her fusion jazz album "Transformation," which I immediately ordered off Amazon as soon as the local PBS announcer told us who this incredible musician was.
Bonnaroo has been known for years as being the event where new talent can strut their stuff and get exposed to a wider audience. There's a lot of good acts in the line up this year and it's not too late to add this amazing talent to the list.
Getting Led Zeppelin in there wouldn't be too bad, either...
