Bread and Circuses return

Posted Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 10:09 AM

Late last night, before hitting the hay, I took a brief glance at my RSS feed that spits out the latest stuff off the wire services and was dismayed to see no less than three separate stories concerning the show "American Idol."

Apparently, this glorified talent show is important news - so much so that anything associated with it now ends up repeatedly on local newscasts.

Is this show really that important?

I'll admit that my prime time viewing have dropped to nearly zero over the past 15 to 20 years and this trend of putting game shows, Candid Camera mutations and other such "entertainments" on the air isn't helping any.

I was at a night spot recently and they had the new "American Gladiator" on the big screen. At first, I thought it was the old Arnold Schwarzenegger film, "The Running Man." The similarities were a little too striking.

Of all the science fiction movies that have tried to predict the future, why did it have to be that one to get so much right?

So, what's the fascination with "Idol" and other shows like it? Am I the only one that finds this trend completely mind numbing?

I enjoy watching it cause I love music. Plus it is a show that we can all watch with out cussing..killling..sex..or getting the crap scared out of you..Plus on the other station Barbara Walters had a special on about living to be 150 were they frezze you until they find a cure for what killed you...Which sounded like it was really off the wall..It is just a good clean show.

There is not much that I watch on TV anymore.

I absolutely hate American Idol and have yet to see what all the fuss is about. The people who win, excluding Kelly and Carrie, tend to go nowhere with their career. I only watch the auditions and even they are getting stupid. and as for "American Gladiators" YUCK..thanks writer's strike, and thank God it's over and I can get back to some decent television.

The reality TV is beyond mind numbing. I watch the TV Guide Channel to see what's on and even they are rerunning the reality TV shows. The only one I find mildly interesting is "Wife Swap"

The one thing the new 'American Gladitors' did not have that 'Running Man' did was Richard Dawson - and that makes all the difference.

Honestly I like American Idol I don't watch it much until they get down to the final 12 because I figure Hey That is the top ones anyway. I also like America's Got Talent. Although I didn't agree with last years winner of America's Got Talent I will watch it again this season I am sure. Cas Haley should have won last year he was definitely the Best of the best .

Wife Swap, The Bachelor, The Age Of Love, The Nanny, Amazing Race, Survivor, Marry My Mom, Last Comic Standing, Extreme Make over, Big Brother, if that's all that is on TV I just as soon watch The Weather Channel.

I would rather watch static than most of that stuff, but I must admit that I am addicted to Hell's Kitchen, something about Gordan Ramsay..YUM LOL...

We have only watched Idol once, & that was the night the Doolittle girl was voted off. (Doolittle is her name; she is not from Unionville.)

Disturbia, now I know how you got your name...Just Kidding!!! He gives me the heebie jeebies...my husband wants to ram a fork in his eyeball.

I like Idol a little better now. I think Michael Johns is someone I would buy music from. The others are all over the place or kareoke kings/queens.

I don't watch any of the others, and truth be told, I just watch the highlights of Idol the next day on the net. I don't really watch TV much and as soon as it gets a little warmer, I'll be outside until I have to go to bed.
