    On the good side, are you now past it with full recovery? How about Bingo?

    Is there anything you can share with us about why the disease was transferable? Was in mainly because your good bacteria was missing, when you were exposed?

    How do they think you were exposed in the first place? You said something about hand washing so I am guessing it could come from food?

    Can it be diagnosed in pets BEFORE it transfers to a humans? I gather some could be carriers and not show symptoms?

    Many pets visit hospitals and our inside pets like to come visit us while we are in bed and I am on antibiotics for infections that developed from pollution reactions in Beijing.

    OK, I am done with the questions and if you are still recovering, it can wait.

  • Hi, Steve! :) Yes, the dog and I are completely recovered.

    This is probably way more information than you really wanted! LOL

    Some "bad" bacteria do good things, in the right amount. The antibiotic for the original sinus infection killed the infection, but I was left with TOO much good bacteria.

    Here goes: This bacteria, as with many others, is transferred fecal-to-oral. Ooooo yuck!

    This particular type of infection is not easily diagnosed in animals, because it is cost-prohibitive and the technology just isn't there yet.

    However, in a lot of cases the animal could be diagnosed first. Unfortunately most general practitioners aren't thinking in terms of zoonosis.

    The only reason I put it together was that my dog started having the same symptoms as I - gastrointestinal distress and lots of diarrhea - oooooo yuck!

    Totally grossed out yet?

    Well, we clean a lot of litter boxes so grossed out or not, can it be transmitted by cats? They occasionally do have diarrhea.

    All our dogs are outside dogs so we would not be cleaning any unless they had it on them. This could be good to know just in case that happens though.

  • I think this particular bacteria, known as c-diff, is the same as e.coli. All mammals have it in their intestinal system. It is consided a beneficial bacteria. It is only a problem when the amount of bacteria is not in balance.

    So glad you got to go to China!!!

  • In the food world E.Coli can cause kidney failure and varies other issues....there are several different strains, and is usually found in processed meats, and is way more common then you might think because we have to process these meats for consumption, however salmonella is almost always found in chicken and some seafood like shrimp... basic rules for cooked foods are, "When in Doubt Throw it Out"...and there is a 2 hour window for storage or preparation for any raw foods between 40 and 140 degrees fahrenheit...keeping cold foods cold and hot foods hot, after the 2 hours bacteria can multiply and climb rather quickly....to remedy any bacteria on food, always be aware of cross contamination, especially with cutting boards or your hands, knives, etcetera ...and I am sure we all are aware that we should cook foods throughly, normally to an internal temperature of over 160 deg. for meats....I spent 10 days one time in the hospital after being poisoned with salmonella from a shrimp salad at Shoneys...I knew it, right at that first bite...bacteria infections are definitely no fun...I'm so sorry anyone would have to go through one.

  • I am glad to hear that you are feeling better. Just in time for the humming birds to depart and the red breasted grosbeaks to reappear.... I saw them first time last fall, and was pleasantly surprised seeing them this spring.
