It is good to be back and thanks to those of you who asked about me! Indeed, I was ill for quite a few weeks this summer. On the good side, I can use my illness to illustrate how easy it is to transmit zoonotic diseases - zoonotic referring to illnesses transmitted from animals to people and vice-versa.
I developed a fairly serious sinus infection earlier in the summer. In order to kill the infection, I had 4 courses of an antibiotic. Finally it got killed, but as they say, sometimes the cure causes more problems. The drug also killed a lot of the good bacteria living in my intestines. And I got an intestinal infection.
Before I was actually diagnosed, I must have had an episode of poor hand washing. In almost a blink of the eye, I passed on my infection to my beloved dog, Bingo. Within a few days, the dog and I had the same symptoms and were placed on the same medication to treat it. (Before you ask - I saw MY doctor and she was treated by HER doctor!)
In a different circumstance, I could just as easily have caught this infection from the dog. It only takes a single, unseen-by-the-human-eye, bacteria.
Also, if I had a wild animal as a pet, my husband, myself, my dog or cat could have caught a disease - just that easily.
This was not a pleasant infection, and Bingo and I did not enjoy being examples!!!
