Hot Weather Tips

Is it ever hot out there today! It seems that August has rolled in with a vengence! I was out earlier swimming laps, and it felt like I was going to melt. In this really hot weather, please remember your furry family members. Bring your pets indoors, if you can. If not, then make sure they have plenty of shade and clean water to drink. NEVER, NEVER, EVER leave your pet in a parked car. No. Not even with the windows down. It only takes a few minutes, before your pet starts suffering. Do You Know Me?
|
I would love to know what to do with my dog (that I love dearly) since she can't come into the house (landlords rules) I have her a dog house but she won't go into into it, I have a neighbor that comes over about every couple of hours to change the water. We have plenty of trees, yet she chooses to lay in direct sunlight with a large amount of fur I might add. Do you have any suggestions of what I may be able to do to keep her safe in this heat?

Most dogs won't use a dog house in this kind of heat anyway. It's usually cooler outside than inside a dog house with temps like this. Hold on to that good neighbor. It's good that her water is changed every couple of hours.
First - What kind of dog is she? Does she require her coat for protection from the sun (with some breeds it's more detrimental to shear them than to let them keep their coats), or would it be better to groom her to a shorter length.
Second - Place her tie out where she can only be in shade. Take into consideration what angles the sun is in at all points during the day.
Third - You can get her a small children's wading pool and fill it up with water and place in the shade. Lots of dogs love these to cool off in. Just make sure that you change the water daily, so it doesn't become stagnate and a breeding area for mosquitos.
Hope this helps.
