Know Your NumbersPosted Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 3:18 PM
At the Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association meeting on Monday night, we were given some monthly statistics from Bedford County Animal Control and Shelbyville Animal Control. These numbers are exactly why I continue to do what I do. Everyday, I hope these numbers will become lower and lower.
BCAC: Number of animals humanely destroyed July '07: 182 SAC: Number of animals humanely destoryed July '07: 51 I'll have to admit that even I am shocked and saddened by these numbers. I've got to work harder. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

This is sad Cheryl. Have you guys ever considered instead of killing these pets maybe they could be placed in homes with the elderly? There are a lot of elderly people who would enjoy the company of a pet many don't have the funds for adoption fees but could easily handle the cost of some food..and it would be better than having to kill so many of these unwanted pets. Not to mention it would give these elderly people some type of companion. That's just a suggestion..maybe if we all think hard enough we could come up with some more solutions for this problem.
Dianatn-
Shelbyville-Humane Assoc. is basically a last ditch effort for a lot of the death row dogs from Bedford Co. Animal Control. So, we are basically a no kill. Unfortunately, SBCHA has no say in their rules and regs. It's usually set forth by the county and the city. It's up to all of us citizens to work together and try to come up with new solutions.
That idea IS GREAT. Maybe we should try to come up with a program like that.
I recently rescued 3 small kittens from an abusive home. When I got them home one of them was gurgling and wheezing, I assumed that is was just a cold, but after 2 days of it not eating I took it to the vet. The cat had been beat in the head and the gurgling was actually the sound of blood in it's lungs and the reason it wasn't eating was because it had lost it sense of smell due to the beating. Thankfully after the $75.00 medicine the kitten is doing better and now eating.
I was informed that if I would call the humane society and told them that I had rescued them that they would help me find them a home, I cannot keep them and my only other option is to return them to their abusive owner.I told this to the machine that i got when I called the HS and noone has called me back and I have called for over a week. I have no other choice but to give them back because I can find noone that wants one of them, sadly cause they are black cats. Oh people and their phobias...I am hoping you can help me find another resource or a way of helping them.

If you still have the kittens I may be able to help you. I know of some elderly people who would be tickle to death to get a kitten. I don't know how I can contact you..I don't know about you but I truly don't want my email addy put on an open forum..let me think about how you can contact me about the kittens and I'll get back to you okay?

Can you e-mail me pictures and descriptions of the kittens? If so, I can list them on our petfinder site for you. The humane society can handle the adoption screening for you. In your e-mail, please include your contact information. It won't be published. We need it to set up potential adopters for you.
