Update On TN Proposed Pit Bull Ban

The original bill SB2738 was withdrawn on January 18th. Senator Kilby introduced a new bill, SB3827, which was filed on January 17th. According to a representative from Bless the Bullys: Pit Bull Rescue & Education, who has spoken with Sentor Kilby's Assistant, the difference between the two bills is this:

-The Chapter and Title that the bill refers to

By changing the Chapter and Title it, "...allows Senator Kilby to make broader, more sweeping changes to the bill. SB3827 affects Titles 39 and 44 and, as such, it opens the bill to a wider array of modifications", says Jodi Preis of Bless the Bullys.

She also goes on to say that she was assured by the assistant that the breed specific legislation will eventually be removed from the bill to allow for a dangerous dog law.

According to an article from the Memphis Commerical Appeal, Senator Kilby has no interest in really passing a ban on pit bulls, he is interested in changing the legislation to push for a new, better dangerous dog law.

Glad to see that this is going in the right direction. It seems that the Bill is focused more on dangerous dogs, and not just PB's.

I still think that a fence would be appropriate. And if an owner harbors a known dangerous dog (like my neighbors), then they should be band from ever owning that type of breed again, and the dog(s) should be evaluated and rehomed.

If it weren't for irresponisble owners, this Bill would have never been brought to Legislation.

Dangerous owners will cause trouble whatever kind of pet they have-even an electronic or stuffed one.

It comes down to their lack of care for others.

Fences are great but they are one more expense for pet owners (like car seats for people with children).

It took me several tries before I found a barrier my dogs couldn't get over, under or through.

(I thought I'd rescued some of those teleporting "blink dogs" from the role-playing games.)

But,it was worth it to keep them safe at home and not worrying about them staying chained or roaming at large.

Yeah, we took the reponsibility of putting up our privacy fence before getting our Boxer, although; if you have read my other comments, this is not the only reason we put it up.

If you truely care about your animals, I believe you will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, and the people around you safe.

The neighbors two houses down with the PB's never walk the dogs. They are never off of their chains. It is really sad to see them barking, begging for attention.

I really wish someone of authority would take the dogs from them.

Has someone offered to help them fence in their yard, exercise their dogs or find the dogs a new home?

They may have good intentions but unable to follow through on their responsibilities.

They may feel overwhelmed.

Or they may be selfish idiots who will resent any intrusion by anyone promoting kind and rational behavior.

But giving them the choice reveals whether they are erring on purpose or are just guilty of being imperfect.

Mary,

I know what you mean about seeing some people's dogs outside all the time chained up and dying for attention. I think almost worse than that are the people that let their dogs roam around free - that's potentially even more upsetting since the dogs could not only attack someone, but they could be hit by a car (or hopefully taken in by a nice family). My husband and I are constantly amazed that even though some people have dogs (and cats, too) that they treat them so badly.

Pit bull fighting and breeding is big money in TN. Any time anyone tries to pass laws to protect the dogs or the public, these breeders and their lobbying groups will sling around the propaganda and bully people into submission.

They don't want any laws at all that might cut down on their money they make from these dogs.

And groups like Bless the Bullys do NOTHING about stopping the torture and the fighting while they complain about breed specific legislation. So hypocritical.

When legislators and people stand up to the breeders and the selfish, and get some laws and regulations passed, then the maulings and killing will stop, and these dogs won't be getting tortured any more.

But until that happens, things will continue as they do now.

(And chaining is one of the common things that a pit bull fighter breeder does. Chaining makes them even more aggressive. Pass some anti-chaining laws, please!)

And Bless the Bullys, why don't you do something about the horrible overbreeding of pit bulls? Why not do something to actually help these dogs?

Bless the Bullys is just a rescue organization. And no one person or organization can stop people from breeding pit bulls.

Do you own and love a dog? If so, you better wake up and smell the javaroast people! Breed bans affect every dog owner, not just the targeted breed! I suggest that the public educate themselves on B.S.L. and realize this is the first step in banning ALL breeds! Because as soon as another Pomeranian kills a child again (oh yes, I said another)

Yes, a Pomeranian killed a 6 week old infant but we failed to hear about that because it wasnt a pitbull! Heres the link:

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/US/10/09/po...

So what is next? They will try to ban Pomeranians? You see, until the real problem is addressed ~BAD OWNERS~, there will continue to be attacks by ALL breeds.

I know over 700+ people who own multiple pitbulls, and children, and have NEVER had a problem, because NO breed just turns on ANYBODY without warning unless there is a rare medical disorder. My sister lets her 2 year old daughter ABUSE her dog, and by that I mean pull her tail, pull her ears, hit on her, and so forth to her Golden Retriever mix. She thinks it is funny that the dog takes the abuse and does nothing. But, that is because my sister is in the room. As soon as that dog gets a chance, she WILL bite my niece,(god forbid), any dog would. That doesnt mean they all should be banned. So you see, if we go around trying to ban a breed for the acts of some, then eventually we will have none left, because ALL dogs have bitten, and alot of breeds have killed! From a pitbull, down to a Pomeranian. If we ban everything that can kill, we will be left with nothing in this world but air! Oh wait, polluted air can kill, so will we ban that too?

To the person making comments about Bless the Bullies. No one person can do everything, but everyone can do something. Theres no reason to act like that to this organization. They are trying to do something, just as I am trying to get something done about chaining, and abuse to animals. It wont happen overnight. What are you doing???

Probably nothing just like alot of other people. Get out there, and try to get things changed, and you will see, it can be done, but it is alot harder than it seems!
