Romeo's Law: The Fight Against Animal Cruelty
Posted Friday, February 15, 2008, at 7:59 AM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
Romeo, a yellow lab dog in Kentucky, just may have a new state law named after him. After Kentucky lawmaker, Stan Lee, saw Romeo's owner abuse him blatantly on video, he introduced legislation to change animal abuse and cruelty to a felony status. This new law would also require the abusers to pay for the abused animal's veterinary care. Under the current Kentucky law, Romeo would have been given back to the owner that abused him. Right now, there has been more legislation for the protection of animals introduced in Kentucky's legislation than ever. This past Tuesday, Romeo himself appeared before the Kentucky legislators to fight against animal cruelty. Kentucky animal lovers are asking all animal lovers to contact the Kentucky legislators asking them to support Romeo's Law. I plan to do this myself. Since Kentucky is one of Tennessee's border states, the passage of this law might have an affect on Tennessee's animal cruelty laws. It's time we caught up with the rest of the surrounding states.

I don't know if this would help or hurt laws making animal abuse, harassment at funerals, etc. felonies but,in some areas, three felony convictions equals automatic life imprisonment.
If each injury to an animal or each deceased person at a picketed funeral were counted as a separate offense,a lot of sick, dangerous people would be put away.
Or we might choose to treat them as we would ill-behaved pets that have mental damage or poor training- let them stay among us while clearly identified, under strict control and undergoing extensive rehabilitation.
Oh-and they'd have to be neutered.
Whether we're talking man or beast,if they are allowed to run at large hurting others, they're going to wind up facing a lethal injection-or worse.
Thank You Cheryl for putting this out there in Tennessee!! I would like to ask that all you folks that give a darn about how animals are treated by us so-called "civilized" people take two minutes to email our fine government at LRCWebmail@rc.ky.gov and tell them in no uncertain terms that you support SB 58. This is the exact same law as Romeo's Law (HB 145) without his name attached. We'll make sure that happens for Romeo after the bill passes!! This little guy deserves every good thing he can get. If anyone would rather make a call, the number is 1-800-372-7181. Or, even better, DO BOTH!!! Call and write!
Again, many, many thanks.
