"Poker run" makes me think.
Could we have poker games with all the entry fees and proceeds going to the critters?
Apparently,we have a number of folk who enjoy a friendly hand of poker and if they could have a flutter or two without breaking the law (or endangering their souls or their bank accounts) then that might save a few animals' lives and health and prevent unwanted pups and kittens from being conceived.
We might also promote obedience or "parenting" classes for prospective pet guardians and host visits from different groups that help animals.
One might be a group such as "Last Chance".
This organization rehabilitates humans and animals that have been written off as lost causes by training prisoners, the severly handicapped, etc. to take "useless","redundant" and "unadoptable" pets and teach them how to be therapy animals.
Animals once destined for euthanasia wind up assisting their new partners by detecting seizures, hearing the phone or door bell, helping them with their mobility or just giving moral support.
The human coaches can also help groom and socialize pound residents to help them be better suited for new homes and even train them in agility classes and canine and feline "good citizen" certification.
4-H,Scouts,and other youth groups have done similar work but there seems to be a bit of extra benefit when the animals get to re-educate and re-purpose the humans as much as the people teach the pets.
Last Chance, the Best Friends Animal Society (the ones that rescued and rehabbed Michael Vicks' victims -as featured on "Dogtown") and similar programs complete the work begun with neutering.
The goal is that no animal come into this world or leave it without having its needs met-including the need for love.
The birth control should limit the number of animals born to something approaching the number of capable, responsible homes for them.
The various adoption and rehabilitation programs seek to help the animals already here.
I hope that we can all co-operate to see that we achieve what is best for our animals - whatever we have to do to get the job done.
