For those of us who cannot take on a new pet, perhaps we could adopt a critter much as we might sponsor a human,a highway or any other entity in need.
We could offer what financial assistance we could manage (anything would help) plus give of our time, our labor and our caring to whatever degree is possible.
One person might help clean kennels.
Another might do grooming.
One might help with socialization or training.
One might clip coupons or collect recyclables to help defray costs of pet care.
One person might help with benefits, get out pertinent information, teach people how to be good stewards of the animals in their care and promote positive legislation.
The folks who can't adopt or foster a pet might help an elderly or indigent person retain their pet.
They could help the victims of battery or natural disaster insure the safety of their beasts.
They could help animals become therapists or perform other useful work.
Ideally,we would all enrich our lives by taking in one more animal into our homes.
When we can't do so,let us take some into our hearts.
Building an enclosure, cat gym or doghouse, knitting a dog sweater, making a safe toy or treat could help.
Supporting a vetinarian who provides medical care free or at reduced cost could mean that a pet could get necessary vaccinations and neutering and other treatment that would give it a decent quality of life.
No one should have to suffer or die just because there's no money to fund its care.
No one should lack the things that cost no more than a bit of our time, sweat and thoughtfulness.
We shouldn't turn away when an appeal goes out and we have to say: "That's not for me."
We can look to see how we CAN help.
Making one of these shelter dogs part of one's family could be the best choice a person could ever make.
One would not only be saving another's life but enhancing one's own.
Next to giving love to one, specific being in one's household, few things offer more satisfaction than doing whatever can be done to see that all lives one can effect get all the help they can.
Maybe, one of us believes "as you have done unto the least of these, even so have you done unto Me."
Maybe, another has concluded that "In the greater scheme or the big picture, nothing we do matters. There's no grand plan, no big win.
If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today.
Because, if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world. "
We can work out why we should be kind and what (if anything) we should get out of it later.
Today,we can make one, small attempt to touch the world around us.
If the tainted souls among us can begin their harm with affecting animals in a negative way, perhaps,we can gain momentum in helping the world by begining at the same place.
Our actions and inactions are cumulative.
Let's see what we can put together to do some good for the dogs, other beasts and even ourselves.
GREAT suggestions quantumcat!!
Thanks!
I agree. Those are some really good ideas.
Great suggestions, hope they have some volunteers. The Bedford County Animal Control and Shelbyville Bedford County Humane Association has a list of things they need all the time. If people can just help with that it would be great and volunteers are always a huge need even just to pet the animals or spend time with them.
