One of local news stations ran a story last night, about the hazards of over the counter flea and tick medications for dogs and cats. It seems that Bio Spot can cause adverse reactions. After receiveing over 44,000 complaints the EPA has launched an investigation. The ingredient permethrin is the culprit. If you are using flea and tick medications, please check the ingredient label and avoid those containing permethrin. It's better to be safe than sorry. To read and view the entire story click HERE.

we use only a vet approved product but we were suspicious of losing Cooper last year to adverse reaction to Frontline.

They say it was NOT the Bobcat disease transmitted by dog ticks, although we found a cluster of dog ticks on Cooper's belly just before he developed the final fever that took him.

However, we were also half dosing him with Frontline (at vet suggestion) because he became very lethargic when the full dose was administered. When he became lethargic right after the half-dose, we presumed it was another reaction but he never recovered.

If it wasn't bobcat fever, then we presume it was the flea and tick treatment. The vet said he probably had an immunity problem right from birth.

This is not to stop anyone from using the Frontline since our other four cats and three dogs use it without issues. It is just a caution if your pet seems to be lethargic after treatment.

In retrospect, we would keep Cooper inside and stop the treatment. He would not have been a happy camper for a while but he might still be with us.

We have a new kitten (on loan to us from our daughter) and she may never know the outside while she is here. We just don't want to take the chance.

I bought some Bio-spot last year for my Shih Tzu and I almost lost her, almost immediately after applying the bio spot she started to run in circles like it was hurting her. I immediately picked her up to hold her and she began to have severe convulsions. This went on for about an hour it was about 9pm, so my vet's office was closed. She did not get any better during that hour so I began searching the internet for help with her, I came across a website that said to wash her repeatedly in Dawn Dish soap to remove what was left of the Bio Spot it seemed to ease her just being in the water. I washed her about 3 times with Dawn Dish Soap and she began to calm down some. So I took her out of the tub and towel dried her and sat and held her close. She began shaking again but I wasn't sure if she was just frightened or if it was still the effects of Bio Spot. So I ran another tub of very warm water and sat in the tub of water with all my clothes on with her close to me...she finally calmed down but I sat in the tub all night with her. When morning came she seemed better but acted oddly so I called my vet and she said to bring her right in..they checked her at the vet and said if I had not washed her the way I did she probably would have died. She did get better from the incident but I will NEVER use any kind of Flea Control on her again. I use the pills if I see a flea on her but other than that I use nothing but I do keep my yard treated for Fleas and Ticks (so that helps a lot). I called Bio Spot and explained what had happened and they informed me it wasn't their problem and they were not responsible because it sounded like she had an allergic reaction to the product.

I have also had some people tell me if you add a little white vinegar to their drinking water it will keep fleas and ticks off of them. I don't know if that is true or not because my picky dog wouldn't drink the water with vinegar in it

I worked for a vet and the Bio Spot is not a good thing.

I use Frontline Plus on my cats and dog. Cannot use on rabbits though, you have to use Advantage for them.

I am very cautious of any poison on pets, but I saw people flea dip their animals and then use the OTC flea medications like Hartz and Seargents.. and they would bring the animals in with severe convulsions and even death.

that double dose would kill them.

I have found that frontline is better for ticks and advantage works better for flees.

My children want a puppy, and I am getting use to the idea. I know alot of people that have pets, and do not take care of them, nor do anything with them. I have alot of questions, like where is the best local vets, can they keep you informed on what to feed your pet and how often, of course all the shots, worming, and spay/neuturing? How much cold weather is too cold, and hot weather is too hot? I do not like any aggressive dogs, so what kind of dogs are good for kids and are good to keep indoors, and want get too big? Are Jack russel dogs good with kids and people? Is their a place that will keep the dog groomed, are they expensive. Is their a place or website that can give me all this information? Having a pet is a lifelong commitment, and I want to be prepared for the little pooch, if I do in fact get one. One of my children has allergies real bad. She seems to react more around cats, I haven't really noticed anything around dogs though.

I've always been a fan of using Seven Dust 5%, on the label itself it says to rub into the pets coat. Same stuff I use in the garden!

Momof3&3step&1gran

Jack Russels are really cute dogs but they are extremely Hyper. Their barking will drive you insane if your not careful.

Shih Tzus are wonderful dogs they are very good with children also. They are small and fluffy, the perfect lap dog. I use Southside Vet and I have always been pleased with them. There are also several places to take your dog to have them groomed.Puppy Palace is in front of SCHS there is also one called the Red Barn. My personal fav is Doggie Do she does it from her home and she lives off Wartrace Pike. The cost is about $30 to wash, cut, trim nails and clean anal glands. I have mine done about twice a year once in late spring and again in the fall. The rest of the time I just bathe her myself which is not too hard. My Shih Tzu is house trained and using puppy pads when I am at work and goes outside some also when I am home. They aren't the kind of dogs to be left outside too much although my daughter leaves hers out most of the time and they do just fine. If it gets below freezing she brings them inside.Sometimes you can find full grown Shih Tzus on craigslist for free and are already housebroken which is always good unless you prefer a puppy.

Momof3&3step&1gran you are asking good questions and I wish MANY more would ask these in advance as you are doing. I would bet you will get a wealth of knowledge from here as well as visiting a vet or two. I will start a new blog and transfer your questions without your T-G I.D. You can decide if you want to speak up more.

Vets should have a good line on some puppies that are available. They will know the dog's mother, possibly father and should know the mother's nature. Of course the Humane Society and Animal Control will help you with adoptions as well.

People are much less prone to dog allergies, but take your child to meet the potential puppy. The only problem I have with visiting the animals is that I usually love them all and hate to leave any behind.

We have 2 Yorkies and they are great dogs. I prefer females to males. They were fairly easy to crate train. Our vet is Dr. Stimpson he is very sweet to the dogs. My son has severe allergies to animals and the Yorkie breed does not bother him. I have not heard great things about Puppy Palace, I use Tina's Red Barn. If you use a groomer your vet needs to know so they can give them a treatment to prevent kennel cough, it can kill them. Most important make sure to get them spayed or neutered. For the female if you don't it increases their chance of breast cancer. You need to do it before they go into heat the first time. Good luck with your search. I never had an animal and ended up with 2 in a year's time. I didn't realize how much you can love them and how much they add to your life!

There are several things that can be done to help cut down on fleas and ticks and they are natural! You can add garlic and wheat germ will sometimes help seven dust always seems to do the trick when the fleas get really annoying.

I have used Puppy Palace for several years and they have always treated my elderly poodle like the princess she is. I love those people.

Steve mentioned up in the first comment about Bob Cat fever. I was doing some internet research on it, since one of my cats was just diagnosed this week. I know this is rare and my little one may not survive, but at present she seems to be feeling a bit better and has started eating. Have anyone in Bedford County had any experience with Bobcat Fever?
