Cooper braves the cold
Posted Monday, March 1, at 3:42 AM
Welcome to college baseball Jordan Cooper.

One of the top pitching arms to ever come out of Bedford County made his debut for the Kentucky Wildcats on Feb. 20.

Just four days after his 20th birthday, the Shelbyville Central product tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings at the back end of a 6-0 Wildcat win over West Virginia in the Caravelle Resort Tournament on Vrooman Field in Conway, S.C.

On Saturday, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander allowed two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings as the middle reliever in a 4-3 win over Bowling Green in his home debut at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky has high hopes for Cooper. It anoints him as the gem of UK's sixth-ranked recruiting class.

Cooper makes his return to Tennessee on March 26 when the Wildcats trip to Nashville for the start of a three-game series versus Southeastern Conference rival Vanderbilt. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling (615) 322-GOLD.

New Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley has his hands full as the clock is quickly ticking away with National Signing Day looming. As I stroke these keys he has 12 days remaining. Dooley's logged plenty of frequent flyer miles trying to get his first recruiting class up to snuff with Southeastern Conference foes. Reportedly, he's already been in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Virginia...

The search for a football coach to replace Lane Kiffin at Tennessee has resulted in roughly 1,437 various rumors upon last count. Allegedly, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, TCU's Gary Patterson and Connecticut's Randy Edsall have all pulled their names out of the hat...

A heavily-scrutinized selection process for Southeastern Conference schools has come to a close for Tennessee football fans. The Volunteers have accepted an invitation to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. "We're absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to host the Volunteers again in the Chick-fil-A Bowl and give coach (Lane) Kiffin his first bowl experience at Tennessee," said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO. ...

Young turning the corner

Humiliation. Pain. Anguish. Sometimes we have to take two steps back in order to take one step forward. While the Tennessee Titans enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in 2008-09, the quarterback they drafted with the third overall pick in 2006 was spiraling down an unforeseen path that dealt with being booed by his own fans at LP Field, spraining his knee, allegations of a suicide attempt and losing his job as the starter...

Studs visiting Neyland

This time of year youth football games are taking place on the weekends all across America. Bedford County alone has four divisions (Flag/Pee Wee, Division I, II, III) in four different leagues (Cascade, Community, Liberty and Shelbyville). If you're on the fence about whether or not to let your little one take part in the contact sport, you may reconsider after watching tape on high school linebacker Jeff Luc of Port St. ...

VY tells all

If there's an athlete that truly confuses me it's Vince Young. For a 26-year-old who's entering his fourth season of professional football, he should be mature by now and know what to say and, more importantly, what not to say. I understand to be in the pros you have to have a certain swagger about you because the mental grind can beat even the most confident athlete down if they don't keep their chin up...

So, what's the point?

HOOVER, Ala. -- The search is finally over. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier admitted Friday that it was his ballot that didn't have Tim Tebow selected as preseason All-Southeastern Conference. But, Spurrier told reporters at SEC Media Days that in 17 years he hasn't filled out one such ballot. Someone in the athletics department types it up and Spurrier glances at it before it's sent it...

Waiting on Scroggings

For Tennessee football fans that follow recruiting, the anticipation is spilling over. What hat will Jesse Scroggins put on Thursday? The 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback out of Lakewood (Calif.) High School told observers yesterday through his myspace page that he pushed his commitment time to Thursday at 2 CDT on ESPN's College Football Live...
