My thumbs are soar

Well, it's been a week now. College coaches should be starting to get the feeling back in their thumbs since the NCAA put a stop to text messaging recruits.

Every coach at SEC Media Days was asked about the new rule. Most didn't seem to care too very much. That's most likely because it's their young graduate assistants and recruiters that used to the tool so well. The head coaches are probably still used to pulling out a big card and hand writing a letter to a kid.

Florida coach Urban Meyer seemed to oppose the rule with some passion. At just 43 years of age, he is one of the younger coaches in the SEC and can relate to the athletes a bit better than most, which also makes him one of the top recruiters in the country.

Taking text messaging away from him and his staff may or may not hurt them. They are, after all, national champions and not that far from the beach. But, the NCAA likely had someone listening during Meyer's speech in Hoover.

"I disagree with it. In my opinion, it's wrong. I mean, that's how you communicate nowadays. If you want to go back and use the rotary phone, too, say coaches can only use a rotary phone. OK. I don't understand that at all."

Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said high school coaches were pleased to see the rule outlawing the thumbing since kids were allegedly sending texts in class to college coaches.

Surely not. Surely coaches have enough sense about them to not take away from a kid's education. On top of that, what is a kid doing with a cell phone under his desk in class?

Like some of the coaches suggested, technology always stays ahead of the rules. How else can Barry Bonds have a head bigger than most children and not have tested positive for steroids?

Look for coaches to start getting pages on myspace.com. They'll send messages to the kids on there and the kids will in turn be able to get them sent directly to their phone. When the flag goes up, a coach can just say he was sending the kid an e-mail.

I never would have guessed that texting would take on like it has. I never thought I would buy in either. Didn't even get my first cell phone till just prior to '05. But, my last cell bill showed nearly 1,800 texts.

Maybe that just means I am not as old as I think. I'll try telling that to my sore knees, ankles and shoulders.

LOL.. texting is new to alot of folks, and then an age old practice for others...

But the fact that coaches lure students in with texts shouldn't be surprising anymore...

It's all about FAST communication not the quality of it... Wether that is good or bad is the decisions of the one's communicating... It, like most issues are totally normal to a younger generation, while the older generations are slow to adapt, if at all.

I think things that are 'official' though, such as recruiting or electing officials should have a paper trail, in order to defend itself in the case of any allegations being brought forth. To me, this issue is debatable, but the age difference and experience of participants will be strongly divided.

The really good thing about texting is even when you are out of your service area for making calls..you can text without the roam charges. :>)
