To play or not to play?

Looks like the decisions of some nearby school systems are making things pretty tough on local administration in terms of dealing with heat and athletics.
Yes, participating in sports in triple digit temperatures can be dangerous. But, like one coach told me, it's not like this is the first year in our state's history that it's been hot in August. I can't say I recall ever seeing so much hoopla over the sun. Cancellations are a bit extreme. Moving practice times back, monitoring the athletes and keeping them away from extreme amounts of caffeine and other harmful performance-enhancing fluids and pills should do the trick. Trust your coaches. Don't these football fields have lights? What's wrong with practicing at 7 instead of 3:30? I understand several kids don't drive and their parents work, making it hard on them to get to practice. But, believe me, if they want to play, contribute and get better, they'll find a way to get on the field. Whether it's hanging out with a teammate who does drive or trusting a neighbor, kids can find a way. Those schools who aren't allowing the kids to practice now had better have the fluids and ambulances ready when the seasons start in a couple weeks. When you ask a girl to show up and play 80 minutes of soccer or a football player to put his hand on the ground for four quarters, their bodies are going to break down without being properly conditioned. All three local football teams have scrimmages scheduled for Friday. We'll see if they get to play them. Let's hope we can find a happy medium to all the issues of summer. I dont agree with the cancellations of practices and games, simply because we can still practice and play in this weather. However, it is up to each individual and the condition and health of their own body, if they can deal with the heat. As long as a good supply of water is nearby, everyone should be okay. Just sunday, a man collapsed due to the heat and died of a heart attack, but he was also 68 and had had past heart problems, and also hadn't taken his medication.
I think that the people involved with sports will be okay.
