Our nation's anthem

Given what 9/11 means to this country and its natural citizens, it makes me really think back to that time when everyone was putting flags on their porches, windows or vehicles.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was, and still is, played or sung with pride.

Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of fans gather to watch high school football games. Often times the home team's band plays the anthem, with everyone standing with their right hand over their heart.

But, where are the football teams?

It seems like for the last couple of years, at least, the players and coaches are still in the locker room during the playing of the anthem and don't come out until it's time for the coin toss. Immediately after the toss, the captains join their squads, they run through their signs and the game kicks off.

Seems like it's the same in college. But, the Titans and their opponent are lined up shoulder-to-shoulder on the sidelines.

Anybody else see something wrong here?

I would like to add that anyone that doesn't want to remove their hat during the national anthem should start swimming to Cuba!

Thank you, Nathan. That is one of my biggest gripes. When we went to the CMT Music Fest (FanFair) I almost got into it with a couple of "cowboys" over them not wanting to take their hats off during the national anthem. Unless you're in a designated public service uniform and you salute when the national anthem is played, take your hat off, hold it in your right hand, and cover your heart with it. Oh yeah, try to face the flag while the national anthem is being played also. That's one thing that usually gets me some odd looks when I'm at a sporting event. If there's no color guard and I turn around to face the flag while the national anthem is being played. People behind me usually turn around to see what I'm looking at.

What is worse than that is ,I have watched people remain in their seats during the Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance

While switching channels this morning, I saw and heard something that made me sick. Three, I said three, of the National news channels i.e. CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS, etc. were carrying the coverage of the 9/11 tribute in New York and all three were talking thru the singing of the National Anthem. Nothing they were having to say at the time was anywhere close to as important as the words and their meanings in that SONG.

I just don't understand the importance of the national anthem at a sporting event.

I am all for the national anthem, I don't mean to disgrace it, but why is it incorporated into sports? When the game's over, or even after kickoff or the starting whistle, most people forget the National Anthem was even a part of the ceremony.

It's honestly more of a routine, like going to church and not paying attention... The words in the song have wonderful meaning, but often they are forgotten...

At least we have the freedom that other countries so desperately desire , it should be a honor and a privilege to sing and stand for the anthem.

As for going to church and not paying attention ,that has become a very bad habit that needs to change.

Yeah... or Maybe the church should start paying attention

I think that everyone in the U.S. should speak english and be greatful that they are able to be in this country. I believe that everyone must learn the words to the National Anthem in order to live and work in the U.S.
