The four finalists for the Heisman Trophy were announced this week. Arkansas all-everything tailback Darren McFadden will join a trio of signal-callers on the grand stage for the award presentation. Hawaii's Colt Brennan, Florida's Tim Tebow and Missouri's Chase Daniel all vie for the award. As I've said before, I could care less who wins it after Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was thrown under the bridge in favor of Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson. Nevertheless, voters still didn't get it right yet another year. Essentially all the award is is a popularity contest among the biggest names on the top teams. It's almost odd for McFadden to be considered even though he is clearly the best back in the land. The second best back, Ohio State's Chris Wells, didn't even get a sniff of the honor oddly enough. The sophomore bruiser ran 254 times for 1,463 and 14 TDs for a team playing for the national title. Other than not being an upperclassmen, he is the prototypical Heisman candidate. Perhaps they didn't like the shipping costs from New York to Columbus after Troy Smith took it home last year. Who knows? Tebow's not even the best player on his team on his own side of the ball. Percy Harvin is. Tebow gets the numbers in an offense designed for a fullback with a decent arm to pile up TDs. Wait till freshman 6-foot-5, 243-pound freshman Cameron Newton gets his chance. Think super-sized version of Tebow with a cannon for an arm. No matter what coach June Jones says, Brennan is a system guy as well. If they didn't throw it 59 times a game he probably wouldn't be there either. Daniel had a solid year for a solid team. Too bad they vote before the bowls cause McFadden and Daniel will grace the same field in the Cotton Bowl. Who do you think should win it? Tim Tebow.
The Heisman Trophy has become a joke. Basically, one can refer to it as the Hypesman because of all the hoopla that surrounds it. I too lost interest in it when Charles Woodson was chosen over Peyton Manning. There were several other players in 1997 that I thought should have won it over Woodson.
I believe, and I would have to go back an look this up, but wasn't Hines Ward from Georgia in the Class of 97? From a pure football player standpoint, he was better that Charles Woodson. Ward did everything on that team from playing quarterback to receiver to running back and he did them all well.
I also thought Troy Smith from Ohio State was not the best player last year because of the competition in the Big 10. He was really exposed in the National Championship game.
I just don't think the Heisman has the luster that it once had simply because of the media hyping one player or another and the bias toward the Big 10 and Pac 10.
The writers said Peyton didnt get it because he didnt beat florida. Tebag loses 3, thats 3 all sec games, but its not going to cost him the trophy. Before they handed out the trophy in 97 Peyton had lost 1 game. That game was to the defending national champions. They could melt that trophy down and donate it to the billary campaign for all i care.
1. I think that the winner should be a Senior.
2. I think they should take the top player or top 2 from each conference as candidates. And narrow it down to the top 4-5 at the end of the season not have the finalists picked a couple of weeks in.
3. It should be based on their whole "starting career".( Some years you have a better supporting cast around you than others.)
4. There should be a rating scale similar to what is used for the Miss America pagent- passer rating or yards per carry, # of TD's, total yds, fumbles/interceptions, etc.; then tally their scores. Let the numbers speak not the press agents.
I think it more of a publicity stunt than anything else now. I won't be holding my breath waiting for the name to be called. I only hope that TEBAG (as tdc called him) doesn't get it. He IS only a Soph.
How many winners have been a complete bust in the NFL? I know there have been several. What do you gain from a trophy if your career is a flop?
I like alot of what you say eastsidemom. But what you gain from that trophy is the fact that your COLLEGE accomplishments have been noticed. It doesnt matter about the pro stuff yet. Peyton won all the other QB awards that year. so i guess it should be good enough that That heisman trophy will forever be remembered as the one Peyton got shafted out of.
