What's the point?

Sometimes people need to take a step back and re-assess why they do what they do and say what they say.

Sometimes I argue with friends and loved ones over the most mundane of topics. Does it really matter what name you give the hostess when you are waiting on a table? Is it worth hurting your spouse's feelings in order to voice your opinion about how they may look when they wake up in the morning?

More and more often in the modern era sports are looked at from an individualistic standpoint even though athletes compete in team sports. Networks like ESPN and Fox contribute to this change with their numerous highlight shows.

The result trickles all the way down to high school, middle school and youth leagues where aunts, uncles, parents and even grand-parents all want the kid with their last name to be the star. It seems like it doesn't matter how well the teams do as long as their child got plenty of action and opportunities. Far too many coaches have told me about fielding complaints from parents aftertheir teams won.

Take a step back already. What are you teaching your child when you bicker about a coach on the way home from a game? What about when you call a newspaper to argue about how little Johnny had six points instead of four?

Taking action like that is just cancerous to our youth and these people need to get their priorities in order. Is it more important to teach your child to be respectful to elders, build character and learn to compete with classmates toward one common goal or just do everything they can to get their picture in the paper?

Someone is always watching, listening and paying attention to what you do. Keep that in mind before you degrade a neighbor over a questionable call or yank your child out of the dugout because they should be pitching instead of that other kid.

It is often much more important to the parents than the child. Our daughter was on the dean's list at MTSU but not listed in the paper. My first response was to get it corrected. Her response, "no big deal".

I wonder,do the families you refer to complain when you omit their child's name from the police blotter?

Wait,don't answer that.

(I don't think I want to know.)

-- Posted by quantumcat on Thu, Jan 24, 2008, at 1:22 PM

Rest assured we DO NOT omit names from the police blotter.

So, are you saying the PARENTS should be teaching their own children? What a novel idea.

-- Posted by tdc on Thu, Jan 24, 2008, at 6:35 PM

Not intentionally,David.

But,if no one noticed that little Whozit helped tee-pee the courthouse,do you think the family would complain that his efforts were overlooked?

Sure about that? Dawn Bobo comes to mind.

Was that the T-G that omitted Bobo's name or did the jail officials omit her name?

Either way since the T-G knew about the case why didn't a reporter stay on the jail officials about it? T-G readers still have not been told if Bobo had a gun permit or not. Is that because the reporter does not want to press the issue with the Sheriff's department. Or maybe it's because they don't want to cause Bobo anymore trouble and if they say nothing about it, then they think the issue will just die. Is that objective reporting?

-- Posted by bunchabull on Fri, Jan 25, 2008, at 7:13 AM

Yes, evil monkey, I don't recall seeing her name in the police blotter blurb. Instead, if you'll do a search on Dawn Bobo, you'll find many HEADLINES about her case. I'm gonna make an educated guess that Mrs. Bobo would of preferred the small two line blurb hidden amid all the other arrests...

-- Posted by Dolittle on Fri, Jan 25, 2008, at 7:13 AM

So this case hasn't received proper press for you bunchabull? At least 4 headline stories and about 300 comments on the story? What more would you like her photo posted on every business in Shelbyville with a Warning to stay clear of her and she should be considered "armed and dangerous". Would that ease your troubled mind?

Dolittle, I really don't know what good it is doing me to reply to you, since you obviously cannot comprehend what people are saying when they post on the blogs.

Did you happen to see the part in my post where I brought up the point about the T-G has never answered if Bobo had a gun permit? If you didn't see it, then you must not have read my post very well or is it the reason I posted above. You just cannot comprehend writing?

I don't need her picture posted. I know what she looks like and I myself have a gun permit, so I'm armed, but I don't carry my gun anywhere I'm not supposed to, so I'm not dangerous either. Put that in your crack pipe and smoke it!

Let's keep comments here related to what Danny's written.

I'll have a blog specifically relating to names in/not in the T-G's jail intake out by late this morning or early this afternoon.

"Put that in your crack pipe and smoke it".... Classy....Good job of keeping it on an adult level.

Great Blog

"Does it really matter what name you give the hostess when you are waiting on a table?" It is just me but I could see George, Jerry and Kramer debating this one at Monk's. (Seinfeld)

Good blog. I've only had one child to play and that was in Unionville. It COULD be a good thing, but there are WAY too many chiefs and too few indians. Basically, its for the "grownups".

These comments are very easy for someone to say, that has not had a child grow up in this area. Where the All Star team is picked before the first ball is bounce or the first pitch is made on the field. See like most parents we teach our child that hard work will pay off, but as a parent you get fustrated when teams are selected not by what the child has done but by what the father does for a living. When your child and everyone else knows that there is a kid out there that is one of the best, but he never gets picked for all stars or travel teams, and you never see his name in the paper. Makes you want to speak up for that child regardless, if it is your child or not. Now I recommend you go back in just the last year, and look at your articles, you will see a common tread, where you yourself has mentioned maybe one or two kids more than any other, kid, and like you said in your post, it is a "Team Sport", so I ask you, why do you mention the same children? Just a thought....

I don't have a kid growing up in this area but I did grow up in Bedford County area. Prehaps a lot of things have change since the early 90's but for the most part the kids who were the best athlete were making the teams regardless of what mom and dad did for a living. As far as to say Mr. Parker's reporting is in favor of a few kids is wrong. He does a great job of giving praise to all teams he has covered since his time at the Times-Gazette.

Wow, shelbyvillesports, can't say I have ever been accused of being biased against certain youths in this town. I have been called a racist against white people and told I copy all my articles out of the Tennessean though. If you see any kids printed more than others, it is because they have the ball in hand or near them more than others. Plus, some kids score in double digits every single game and their names are always in there. I don't get any money under the table and could care less what some of these kids parents do for a living as far as whether or not they are in the paper.

I don't have to have kids in this county to know how all-stars are typically picked. Politics play a role in that sort of thing in just about every community in the U.S. I never made all stars growing up in Lewisburg but somehow had the talent to play college baseball. Hmmm....sound familiar?

-- Posted by Parker on Mon, Jan 28, 2008, at 4:09 PM

That happens everywhere shelbyvillesports....The way it works down in Unionville, is the people who think their child is the best, coach. But, they end up with too many coaches and not enuf players. Then, the wives keep the books. Of course their own kid is going to get all the kudoes in the newspaper because that is what gets turned in. They also suck up to whoever the newspaper sends to photograph to ensure their kid gets a pic.

I'm not saying it should be this way, its just the way it is. My children won't be playing anymore.

-- Posted by countrymom on Mon, Jan 28, 2008, at 6:53 PM

Don't let those comments bother you, Danny. I suspect I know who that person is and I doubt they would be happy if their kid was in everyone of your articles. Then they would want to know why he/she was mentioned only three times instead of six. You do a great job with your coverage and the majority of the parents at Cascade are thankful to have you!

Parker never intended you to take it as you were bias, sorry for the misunderstanding; your points are exactly what I was saying, certain kids get more Opportunities, due to the fact they are coaches son/daughter or one of the parents are on the certain board their child plays on, never wanted to imply that you yourself was purposely highlighting certain children. Sorry if it reads that way. I agree with countrymom, it happens everywhere, I was just saying Bedford Co. is no different, and I can see why parents get a little tired of it. My recommendation is the umpires and ref's pick the all stars, after all, they see every team, and they are not busy coaching during those games. Most coaches only come to the game they are coaching and then leave, very few stick around and watch other teams. Just a thought....in closing don't be so paranoid, you are one of the good guys..

I wasn't going to comment until I saw some other people agree with my thoughts.

I have had kids in sports for many years and I agree that it seems the kids who get played depends on whose parents pitched the biggest fit when they were in junior pro or coach pitch, little league, etc...

By the time they get to MS or HS, some of the talented ones have already quit trying or don't get played enough in 7th or 8th grade so they don't have the experience going into HS.

What's the old saying (the squeakiest wheel gets the grease?--something like that))
