First baseman Mark Teixeira has gone on record saying that he would like to stick it out with the Atlanta Braves through the rest of this season and make a run at the postseason.

No John Smoltz. No Tim Hudson. Pretty much no Tom Glavine. Yeah, keep dreaming Mark. Use that Georgia Tech education.

The Braves sent a spark of energy through their clubhouse and throughout their fan base when they dealt several prospects for Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay. They also struck a deal with Kansas City for Octavio Dotel.

Where did the dumping of numerous prospects get them? Same place as the worst teams in baseball. Home for the postseason.

Perhaps if the Braves had made an effort to keep Dotel after the season, they would be in the hunt this year. Their bullpen has been as terrible as it's ever been. Injuries have taken their toll. Rafael Soriano hasn't been very dependable and may change his last name to DL. Mike Gonzalez is getting healthy after the fact. The experiment with Smoltz back at closer lasted one blown save.

Top to bottom, it's the worse the Atlanta pitching staff has looked in a long time. You can't really blame it on any one specific person since much of the woes have come from the injury bug.

They can greatly help themselves for 2009 and beyond by being sellers at the trade deadline for the first time in two decades.

Mark Teixeira simply must go.

There's no way they'll be able to afford him once he hits the market this offseason. Years of dumping young, cheap talent like Adam Wainwright, Jason Schmidt and Jermaine Dye for rentals such as J.D. Drew, Gary Sheffield and Denny Neagle have taken their toll despite having one of the top developmental minor league systems in baseball.

So, what does .283-20-78 get you on the open market nowadays? Not too much because most of the contenders are set at first and DH.

All fingers are pointing toward Arizona.

Go ahead and offer up Teixeira, some Georgia peaches and a bucket of balls for Max Scherzer, Jarrod Parker and Jamie D'Antona and be done with it.

You've got to get something for a premier slugger like Teixeira. You can't just keep losing talent year after year and not even getting compensatory picks to replace them.

I think the Braves should seek bullpen help from Danny Parker of Shelbyville....;^)

Well, there goes Teixeira. ESPN is reporting the Braves traded their slugging first baseman to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek. Kotchman is hitting .287-12-54 for the big league club. After starting his minor league career as a starter, Marek was moved to the bullpen for his first season in Double-A. He has 57 Ks in 46 2/3 innings.

Well now we have NNOOOOOO!!!!! batters left. Chipper and McCann out hurt. Francouer can't hit a beach ball this year. Diaz was pretty good but he is still out. Kotsay, Blanco, and Escobar are decent but not power hitters. They rest aren't anything to write home about either.

With no bats and no pitching, there is nowhere to go but DOWN. They were already in 4th place with little hope of climbing back in to the race as it was even before injuries and the stupid deal went through.

I liked Mark; he was very good- sometimes GREAT on offense and defense. I don't know how they will make out with this new guy.

Become an Astros fan. At least then you could watch your team seek useless trades and give away prospects while you are 12 games out of first place and 9 games out of the wild card.

I wonder what exactly the Diamondbacks had on the table for the Braves. If they passed on a stud pitcher like Scherzer, they might have made a big mistake. They are hurting big-time for quality arms to start. Outside of Jurrjens, they don't have much. Hampton, Smoltz, Glavine and now Hudson are all on their last leg. Charlie Morton has some talent. Jo Jo Reyes is hit or miss. They have a fireballer in Double A named Tommy Hanson. I saw him throw last Friday. He showed excellent control and plus command of a 92-94 mph fastball. He may deserve a start or two in September.

I hate to say this, but I am afraid the glory days of the Braves is over. When they were sold to by Ted Turner to Liberty Media, it spelled doom. They won't pay the money for the players, so middle of the pack is where they will stay.

I hate to admit it, but I love the Geroge Stinbrenner's of the world. They do and say stupid things, but at least they spend to try and make their team better.
