REPORT: Fulmer stepping down

Posted Monday, November 3, 2008, at 11:20 AM

According to various news sources, Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer is stepping down at season's end.

An announcement is set for later today at Neyland Stadium.

Fulmer was the head coach for the Vols when they won their last national championship in 1998, boasts a record of 150-51 and guided them to the SEC championship game last season. However, his teams have lost 16 of their last 31 SEC games.

There's been speculation around Rocky Top for some time now that Fulmer would be pushed aside or would step aside. A list of prospective names as a replacement has been tossed around radio shows and the Internet. Here are some possibilities:

Lane Kiffin (former Oakland Raiders head coach)

Josh McDaniels (New England Patriots offensive coordinator)
Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach)
Jim Schwartz (Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator)
Will Muschamp (Texas defensive coordinator)
Butch Davis (North Carolina head coach)
Gary Patterson (TCU head coach)
Chris Petersen (Boise State head coach)
Charlie Strong (Florida defensive coordinator)

As a longtime tennessee fan. I am so disappointed It makes me sick. Coach Fulmer invested so much of his life to the Tennessee program, and they dump him like its nothing. Shame on them. He got us to the national championship once and he could have done it again. Every team has bad seasons look at LSU #1 last year not so great this year. I miss him and wish him the very best. But who's really losing he walks away 6.1 millon. Love you Phil, You will always be my favorite coach.

Been a great ride for him, hate to see him go. He is a smart man to go ahead and step down before they made the decision for him. It was coming.

As long as they dont take Bobby Johnson from Vanderbilt then UT can have however they want.

It is a sad day for Tennessee fans, but we have to be realistic. Coach Fulmer, while being a class act and a great ambassador for U.T., has had less than stellar success against Alabama, Georgia, Florida and other ranked teams over the past few years.

I applaud Coach Fulmer's career at Tennessee and wish him the very best for the future. I do hope that he will remain a part of the institution in the future.
