Who do you want?

Everywhere I go people ask me who I think the next coach at Tennessee will be? Obviously, no one knows the answer to that question. A process aided by the Neinas Sports Service should help UT find the right man for the job. They're the firm that helped put Urban Meyer at Florida, Bob Stoops at Oklahoma and Houston Nutt at Ole Miss. It's hard to make out who the top candidates are. If I had my pick, No. 1 would be North Carolina coach Butch Davis. After that, it gets pretty wide open. I'm not so sure the Vols have the money it's going to take to get Davis out of Chapel Hill. They're already paying Fulmer his entire $6 million buyout. Davis is already making over $2 million at UNC considering his entire package. There are a few coaches being considered that I'm not too high on for the job -- Minnesota's Tim Brewster, Texas Tech's Mike Leach, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Lane Kiffin. I am a fan of the young, energetic Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. The knock on him is that UT athletic director Mike Hamilton may not want a guy who's never had his own program or ever had to assemble a staff. That's a cop out in my opinion. All good coaches start somewhere -- Fulmer was their offensive coordinator when he replaced Johnny Majors. Hamilton has gone on record saying he doesn't want to rush the decision and rightly so. Recruits for the 2009 class are dropping like flies, but this is a decision that could propel them back to greatness or set them back 5-8 years. Oh, and Hamilton would likely be fired if he got the wrong guy. Of the recruits that have already jumped ship are D.J. Swearinger, Jarvis Giles and Antonio Foster. Henry County's Dominique Allen is a soft commit and likely will switch to LSU any day now. Arguably the top cornerback prospect in the country, Branden Smith of Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Ga., has gone on record ruling out the Vols. He would have been quite the get. We'll see what happens in the coming weeks. I would think they'd have someone in place by mid-January at the absolute latest. Who would you hire? Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Chris Petersen from Boise State.
Tommy Tuberville. If Auburn takes an L to Alabama he is gone. Proven coach who makes wild and crazy moves with out notice (Just Ask Tony Franklin)but can win just the right games to keep his job safe until he starts looking for another one. I think Hamilton would agree Tommy T would be a great hire beats all the rest. Mike Leach is a gimmick coach and great interview, Minnesota's Tim Brewster I mean Minnesota is 2-0 in vs the SEC ( Glenn Mason was there then so was these two guys named Barber and Maroney?) Brian Kelly at Cincy, a mid major dark horse and I watched him carve up my Blue Raiders in the 06 Motor City Bowl but he has not seen the pressure of big time SEC games. Then again there is so much hoop-a-la surronding this hiring I think Chucky down in Tampa Bay may reconsider his days as GA to be a good one if the Buc's don't win the NFC South. ( Got to Beat Carolina) Best of Luck Tennessee I hope you get your guy!
Johnny Majors
This is going to appear to be sarcastic, but in all honesty, I'd absolutely love to see Steve Spurrier get the job.

I certainly hope Tuberville isn't considered. He's a real Goober!
Tuberville would be a great pick. That way Alabama could bust him in the mouth yearly just like they are in a couple weeks. He's a prick & even I would hope someone better for the Vols. Good Luck, I personally think it's a little deeper than head coach. You just better hope you don't have to go thru what Bama did with all WOW coaches that turned out being over payed gym teachers...
I vote Whit Taylor baby...Im always watching.
A quick re-cap of the coaches on the T-G poll for who should be the next coach at Tennessee... At last check Butch Davis and Mike Leach were neck and neck. Another re-cap both of these coaches got blown out this weekend. OU exposed the gimmick offense of Mike Leach and Butch Davis lost to a pretty bad N.C. State team. With Ty out at Washington you can bet that Leach is willing to "walk" to the great northwest when the Huskies come calling for him. Butch Davis is in a good situation in a weak ACC why would he want to venture in to the NFL again... I mean the SEC with the caliber of NFL talent in the SEC he would like to keep his cozy seat in the ACC. Going back to my pick Tommy T from the Plains is more than likely out of a job unless he can make it lucky #7 over the Tide. I want say he is gone or that he will take a loss to Bama. But you would have to agree like him or hate him he would be a good hire. I mean if Arkansas can fire Houston Nutt and hire Bobby Pertino anything can happen. Thanks for the Blog.
I definitely wouldn't be in favor of old Tommy. I never liked his mannerism displayed on game day. He always seems cocky at the post-game handshake at mid-field. He is arrogant to the point of being nauseating in every interview he gives, and he is very un-loyal to his coordinators when times get tough. Any idea how many Coaches he has fired over the past 10 years when times got tough? He is always ready to point a finger than to accept any responsibility. We don't need that on the Hill in my opinion.
Well Tommy T got his pink slip from Auburn. I had a feeling that if Alabama beat Auburn he was going.
