Is a loss ever a good thing?
Posted Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 10:30 AM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
After starting the season 10-0 and setting several franchise records, the Titans have trickled back from the heavens of the disbelief. When the Tennessee Titans fell 34-13 to the New York Jets on Sunday at LP Field, some said it might spin into a good thing for the stretch run. I beg to differ. Pro coaches know before the whistle usually where their team needs to improve before the following week. The final score doesn't affect that too much. What a digit on the right-hand column does do is it gives selfish players like LenDale White a chance to gripe. Mum was the word for the first 10 weeks as the running back took a back seat to rookie Chris Johnson with the two celebrating touchdowns together regardless of who crossed the plane. Sunday some of the frustrations spilled over as White went on a small tirade about how people need to let him know what's going on with the game plan in light of his getting a mere three plays and one carry (for a 1-yard loss on third-and-short mind you). Would the press have gotten those kinds of answers if Tennessee won? Likely not. You never know though when it comes to professional athletes that aren't used to playing second fiddle to anybody, let alone some rook. To his credit, White did come out and say that he spoke simply out of frustration of their first loss. We'll see if White passes the cranberries to Johnson and the coaches if they manage a loss in Detroit on Thanksgiving. Maybe they should put the headsets down and let LenDale know now he won't be the one blessing the food. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

why so much hate towards the home team?
Why don't you ask LenDale White why he's hating on his own team rather?? His team is 10-1 and he's whining about how many carries he's getting.
"..the Titans have trickled back from the heavens of the disbelief."
What in the heck is that supposed to mean? Weird. Lendale has issues for sure, but don't make this out to be something bigger than it is. He is a selfish athlete that makes stupid comments from time to time, but let's see if this is something that will continue or not. I bet not. This is a very solid football team that is preparing for hopefully a long run in the playoffs. To answer your question, you better believe a loss is a good thing. Ask the New England Patriots. The pressure built up and they couldn't handle it when it really mattered. I'm sure they would admit now a loss late in the regular season would have taken that pressure off and they would have rolled through the playoffs after that. The Jets are a good team and a loss is not a big deal right now, especially if we can rebound in a positive way. It's a long season and preparing for the postseason is most important for this team now. We'll be fine. This is no time to panic or be negative. Heck, we opened the season with 10 straight wins. I'd say the next couple months will be very exciting.
J-E-T-S... JETS JETS JETS! GOOOOOO JETS!
This guy consistently downgrades the Titans so why is he the guy they send to cover them? The other two writers seem to actually care about how the Titans do. Send them and let this guy cover his Cowboys. By the way Parker-they will never see 10 wins this season. T.0. is the biggest whiner on the face of the earth yet you don't bother acknowledging that. His rants are not limited to just a few moments after a game but continue for days and through various media outlets. The Titans may have been in the heavens of disbelief (whatever the heck that means!) but the cowboys are hell on earth. By the way, how is Pac Man working out for you?
I agree with bullmalarkey! Keep talkin dan dan. we"ll see who's farther in the playoffs in the end or wait...Will the Cowboys even make the playoffs? Ha. Maybe TO and his boys Pac Man and Tank Johnson will lead them...NOT GO TITANS. A loss is fine with me!
Remember the EYE is always watchin.
I don't think Danny was putting down the Titans... He is entitled to write his opinion and he dose a good job of covering the Titans when he is on assignment. This is a blog not a story so I for one will not cast a doubt about his covering of the Titans for the T-G. Danny keep up the good work.
Now on with the blog. I agree when this was written Titan fans and myself were besides ourselves. But thank goodness for Thanksgiving and the Detroit Lions they were just what the Titans needed to get back on track. I loss is not a good thing, but it is a learning thing. I think with today's outcome the titans our ready to make a run down the stretch... Danny here is hoping my Titans meet your Cowboys in the Super Bowl.
Happy Thanksgiving to All!
How and why in the world did the Dallas Cowboys come up after a blog about a running back on a winning team griping about his carries?
If it's true you are a Cowboys fan and someone knows that, then I understand their point. It's like the pot calling the kettle black, don't you think? They are a team filled with cry babies, whiners, and selfish spoiled athletes. The Titans are the complete opposite, but yet you choose to blast White, who admittedly messed up and then fessed up, and go after the Titans after their first loss 11 weeks into the season. Where were all your positive stories or blogs during the long win streak? You do seem to only be negative, but yet the other people that cover the Titans are fair. If it's true you are a Cowboys fan, then it really is sad you're blasting White and the Titans when that team in Dallas is a such a disaster. Our franchise is in a whole lot better shape for sure.
Who a reporter pulls for in their free time has no bearing on my job with the newspaper. I never said the Dallas Cowboys are a team of saints. We don't cover the Cowboys. They play in Texas. The Titans play football in Nashville, which is less than an hour away.
White blasted himself with his own comments, and he admitted a day later how stupid those comments were. My point was that a loss for a team with a win streak going is not as positive as some people make it out to be and that is the sort of thing that can happen with a loss. You can't win them all. It was obvious White was waiting on his chance to voice his opinion on how few carries he gets now.
That's true and I have issues with LenDale from time to time. He's selfish like Vince, Chad Johnson, and several of those Cowboy players. But, the Titans obviously turned the loss into a positive with the beatdown on Thursday. The win streak had to end sometime and it came to a very good team. So, no big deal and move on and prepare to win when it matters in the playoffs. My only point was, if you're covering the Titans fairly, where were all your positive blogs in the first three months of the season? I do remember the one after the draft and then this one, a negative blog about White and the loss. That's simply not fair coverage. And, yes, you should be covering the Titans and not the Cowboys. I think that person was saying it's ironic that a Cowboy supporter (I'm assuming you are by your comment) is blogging about whiners on the Titans. As all of us know, this team has something special and negativity has not and will not be an issue with them. They just take care of business time after time. So, please don't pick and choose to negatively blog on the Titans if you're not fair all the way around. That's all we can ask of the local sports editor who covers the local team. Go Titans and keep doing what you are doing.
Sorry for a lack of ra-ra columns and blogs from me with the Titans. We have a guy who does some of that already. Not everything I say about them is negative and by no means do I go out there hoping they lose. I just try to give an unbiased opinion on the state of the franchise. Really, you can't argue with several of the points I have made concerning both the quarterback position and wide receiver.
As for the Cowboys, they still bear zero weight on this argument. If Bull Malarkey knows I'm a Cowboys fan, they're likely a close friend, and I'm very surprised to see them dog out the sports editor in a public forum.
Your loyalties are well documented and I assume people other than your friends know your it. (Do any of the posts below look familiar?) Do you see any positive comments?
Review them well. It appears that your skills at evaluating talent are not quite up to par with the Titans scouts. Every player that the Titans drafted last year made the team and has contributed with the exception of 7th round pick Cary Williams. He is on the practice squad. Their first round pick may very well be an all-pro and/or rookie of the year. Don¡*t believe the Cowboys picks will be either one.
The Titans passed on Michigan WR Mario Manningham to draft a TE out of Cal? Wow! Just when you can't think they can't get any dumber. Don't know anything about the DE they got in the 4th out of Winstom Salem. My Cowboys at least got two outstanding players with their first round picks.

Craig Stephens hasn¡*t done much yet but certainly shows a lot more promise than your boy Mario Manningham who lied at the combine about his drug use then had to admit the truth to all 28 teams in a letter. And you wondered why the Titans passed on him? By the way, he has one reception for six yards this season¡K.. Stephens has the chance to be a premier blocker. Since the Titans are a running team it would appear once again that they knew what they were doing with this pick.
The Arrington kid out of Michigan would have been a high-quality pick for Rounds 6-7 as well. But, what do I know? The TE from Cal was an unbelievably horrible pick considering their needs and who else was on the board. You don't spend that high of a pick on a TE who has almost zero chance of playing. Their entire logic when it comes to the draft is atrocious.
ƒÞ Posted by Parker on Mon, Apr 28, 2008, at 12:57 PM
Arrington? Who? The Titans have two quality guys in Crumpler and Schaife at TE. Nothing wrong with developing a player to step in when they are done is there?
With all due respect Mr. Parker, you are way off base on a lot of your ramblings and your assessments are atrocious. It's obvious you are a Cowboys fan and downgrade the Titans every chance you get. It's like you are just trying to stir up everyone around here for no reason. You haven't had a nice word to say yet and that is just crazy. Unbelievable is a better way to say it. I thought their draft was pretty well done. They filled about every major need they had. It's funny how everybody looks at the 'sexy' and big names on the board from the big conferences and forgets there are plenty of other guys out there that fit the big needs. I love the Johnson pick..he runs a 4.2 and can catch out of the backfield. He is something we desperately needed to compliment White. The two guys from California are outstanding picks. We needed a tight end behind Crumpler because Scaife will play the H-back. And Hawkins is a diamond in the rough at reciver. Sure, a couple picks may seem suspect as do other picks for other teams. But we won't know how they'll play out until a couple years will we? Since you seem to know everything, please tell us who all they missed out on that will make such a bigtime impact right away. It's never a good idea to jump the gun after a draft like you have because it takes time and I think the Titans proved they had a plan to fill their needs. They did well, but you would never admit it no matter what.

My my my. Looks like hornets' nest broke free from the tree. On here just to stir stuff up? Haha! You kids are crazy. Look at the drafts of years past if you need proof on how bad they are at drafting. What's it tell you when you draft eight receivers in four years and three running backs in the top two rounds over the last three seasons? I could be a fan of the Manchester United and see how bad their scouting department is. And, I am not just looking for sexy names. I noted before the draft that a couple of Cal's players, including Hawkins, would be a good fit in Nashville. In fact, the Hawkins pick is one of the best they've had in several years. I may be eating some soup at a Super Bowl party in '09 but I will be watching the Cowboys, not your Titans.

You might want to retract your absurd statements regarding the running backs. I believe that two of the three have rushed for 1,000 yards plus in the last two seasons.
Hawkins hasn¡*t produced but I suspect that he was a project player so we will have to wait and see. He certainly does not qualify as one of their best picks in years though.
Yes, every team has busts. Very few have had as many in recent years as the Titans. They consistently miss on high picks and consistently have to draft the same positions over and over. You bring up quality picks from over a decade ago, even players retired or with other teams. Check out recent history and my point is proven time and time again. This is not an opinion. They simply do not draft well nowadays.

Again, that is simply not true and is most definitely a subjective opinion. 2004 was a bad draft and our play on the field proved that in the next couple years. No argument there. In recent years we've taken Michael Roos, David Stewart, Cortland Finnegan, Vince Young, Lendale White, Roydell Williams, Michael Griffin, all of whom are current starters. Not to mention some others. This is a prevailing thought of most people but it is just not true. I think since Pacman was a bust off the field for us, people just use that a recent example. Overall in recent years, the Titans have done very well compared to just about any other franchise and a 10-6 playoff year with a much-improving team is absolute proof. In the next two years we'll find out about this draft class. I think people will be surprised.

For your readers amusement I am posting just a small list of Cowboy draft picks that I am sure that they would just as soon forget.
1) Shante Carver 1st Rd 1994 (Biggest reach since Rod Hill. Amazingly enough, he was taken before Larry Allen in the 2nd)
2) DeWayne Goodrich 2nd 2000 (biggest reach since Shante Carver)
3) Kendall Watkins TE 2nd 1995(managed 1 catch for 8 yds in his inglorious Cowboys career, was beaten out by the 4th round TE Bjornson)
4) Jacob Rogers LT 2nd 2004 (talented but a wuss)
5) Shane Hannah G 2nd 1995 (never actually played for Dallas)
Rod Hill, CB
LaFleur was the guy intended to replace Jay Novacek, and Carver was the guy going to replace Charles Haley. If you go further down the list, Danny Noonan was the new Randy White. Goodrich, Larrimore-Deion pretenders.
QUINCY CARTER, Sherman Williams, Howard Richards, Rod Hill, Billy Cannon, Larry Bethea, Kevin Brooks, Danny Noonen, and the list goes on and on.
My point is that every team has bad draft picks in their history because the draft by its very nature can be a major crap shoot-especially at the skill positions. Some writers simply continue to magnify them to suit their particular agenda. Instead of pointing fingers at your friends (wow!) and answering questions with a question you may want to rethink your approach.
By the way, I highly suspect that the soup that you will be eating at the 09 Super Bowl party will be made up in large part of a big shiny black bird that caws!
Goodness Mr. Malarkey. You really did some research to try and prove a point, although it missed. I haven't been happy with most of the Cowboy drafts in recent memory either. That's a great attempt though. You want to do any work on the side as a sports writer? You've got some passion.
bullmalarkey,
Here is a post by Mr. Parker that was posted on some of the dates you posted in your blog.
I would have zero problem with that mstufan. I am not a Titans hater. In fact, I want to see them do well. I have never got to cover a NFL playoff game. I just hate seeing them waste high pick after high pick on guys like Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, Paul Williams, Courtney Roby, Rich Gardner, Andre Woolfolk, etc.

I think you may accidently left out this post by Mr. Parker. I mean the 2nd sentence and 3rd sentence is all you need to read.
Not trying to stir the post but I have to re-post this because I feel Mr. Parker is getting some unfair blasting on the topic of being a Titan Hater.
First, it is Mrs. Malarkey. Secondly, a positive comment so that the writer can cover a playoff game has no merit. I fully realize that this is a discussion that will have no winner or loser. I simply chose to refute some negative comments about my home team. In doing so I have created some family dissension so I will not be posting again.....
