Keeping up with draftees

Baseball fans and Bedford County natives can keep up with all players heading to the professional ranks online. My preferred website is Baseball America.

BA has the latest in their draft database as to who's signed and who hasn't. Another way to follow draftee signings is by checking the transaction log on MLB.com.

More specifically, it's easy to keep up with how local product Jonathan White is doing with the Arizona League Giants out west. He closed out June in fine fashion by banging out a pair of singles and scoring twice to help the Giants trounce the Cubs 11-3 on Sunday.

Ironically, White bats in the same lineup as Chris Dominguez, who played third base for the Louisville team that ended White's college career at Vanderbilt in the NCAA Regionals.

Rex Brothers (Colorado Rockies) and Jordan Cooper (Pittsburgh Pirates) have yet to sign. Teams have until August 17 to sign picks.

The Rockies have signed 24 of their top 28 selections. They're taking the draft seriously and getting young players in their farm system quickly. They inked Tim Wheeler for $900,000 already. The outfielder out of Sacramento State was chosen two spots ahead of Brothers. While most organizations try to follow MLB slot recommendations, left-handed pitchers typically sign for more money than outfielders.

Reportedly, Cooper gave the Pirates a dollar figure on draft day of what it may take to get the right-handed pitcher to pass on pitching for the Kentucky Wildcats. The Pirates have already signed their top three choices and should have a better idea as to how much money they have left to spend on prospects and more time to negotiate with them.
