VY tells allPosted Thursday, August 6, 2009, at 11:05 AM
It might be time for Vince Young to quit pounding his chest. (File Photo by Danny Parker)
For a 26-year-old who's entering his fourth season of professional football, he should be mature by now and know what to say and, more importantly, what not to say. I understand to be in the pros you have to have a certain swagger about you because the mental grind can beat even the most confident athlete down if they don't keep their chin up. In Vince Young's interview with Esquire Magazine he talks of how tough his childhood was with an uncle that stole from his family and living in a home full of drugs and mischief. But, he rounds out the interview with talk of his situation with the Titans: "I don't know when I'll start again. But I will be the next black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. And I will be in the Hall of Fame." Those are bold words for a guy who was the face of the Tennessee franchise after being their top pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and earning Rookie of the Year honors before an injury and poor play lost him his starting job to a quarterback they pulled out of retirement -- Kerry Collins. In 33 career games, Young has a passer rating of 68.8 with 22 touchdown passes and 32 interceptions. If he wants to don that gold jacket one day, he better turn it around big-time and in a hurry. There are serious salary cap implications if Young is kept around. So, something's gotta give. Either way, preaching about an imminent Hall of Fame enshrinement might not be the best of ideas. Maybe he is getting 'advice' to talk the talk or maybe he is talking more to himself. I would like seeing his potential fulfilled but maybe it won't be with the Titans.
VY will not be a Titan in 2010 period! Either for salary cap or we trade him. Collins stays healthy, Ramsey is a good enough back up who could step in be a Trent Dilfer type of QB which make good reads let's his defense win the game. VY has made some strides this off-season but not enough to earn the starting job or the back up. I vote to trade VY this year based on potential and hope to pick up some early draft picks maybe we can get a second rounder for him.
I agree. He talks a little too much. I respect his athletic ability and I think he really is a pretty good guy. He just hasn't shown he can handle the NFL so far. He just loves the attention and can't get enough of it. At this point, that's his downfall. He needs to be quiet, work his tail off, and play ball. Once he gets started talking, crazy things start coming out of his mouth. This is what happens when he's been put up on a pedastal his entire life. I hope he does well, but I'm betting he will no longer be in Nashville next year at this time, and I don't know how many teams will really want him.
When I saw he said that all I could think was "He will get to the Hall of Fame, but it will only be the for tour he tacks this weekend" The more he talks, the more we see that he isn't mature and may never change. If he's not making his reads and still throwing behind his receivers, he will never be a starter for this team or any other.
