Confusing seasonsPosted Monday, August 6, 2007, at 7:20 AM
Today's the first day of school in Bedford County. You hear of "going back to school in the fall" but this is August 6.
Since summer officially runs from June 21-Sept. 21 or thereabouts, we're going back exactly in mid-summer. Football's a "fall" sport, yet it's already in the beginning stages. And youth baseball, once thought of as a "summer" sport, is over for many in Bedford County before the end of spring. Hockey, usually a winter sport, will run well into spring in Middle Tennessee if the Predators can ever get their playoff act together -- and if they stay in Nashville. And the Christmas shopping season will be upon us by October. Seasons. Seems like they've changed far beyond their traditional boundaries. Haha!! That is true.. When I played baseball (from ages 4-15) We would always start after T-caps testing.. which was usually at the end of April. I made all stars on several different occasions and we would play well into July at times...
I was wondering about the youth baseball also. I remember being younger and playing in the 80+ degree heat, but this year my son was finished with baseball before the end of the school year. And the also with baseball being the "summer" sport of America, the world series is held in the fall. Times are a changing and it's sad and it happened so quickly. And the Christmas shopping season? Well my wife starts shopping for the next year the day AFTER Christmas.
The world changes everyday around us, it just takes years for us to notice them.
