Rap and the Christmas parade

Posted Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at 10:15 AM

Several reader comments on Sadie Fowler's blog about Shelbyville's Christmas parade indicated disagreement with a rapper's presence.

Why? If his words weren't obscene or violent, rap in itself is (or should be) as acceptable as any other form of music. After all, it's as legitimate an art form as any other type of performing arts.

I'd agree that a family event isn't the place for offensive lyrics.

As far as the rapper not doing traditional-style Christmas music, few complain about the rock and country stars on floats in the annual big-city Thanksgiving Day parades performing their latest non-holiday hits.

I hope those who were "offended" weren't complaining because of racism. If you don't like a particular style of music (or, should we say, ethnic music), fine. Don't listen. But don't try to ban something for others just because you don't prefer it.

Excellent point. I completely agree!

I only thought the rap was ridiculous because of the changed lyrics. C'mon, "5 golden teeth"? (I think that's the way it went, I couldn't really understand what they were saying.)

Anywho, I would have rolled my eyes all the same if anyone sang Twisted Sister's "Heavy Metal Christmas" or the "Redneck's 12 Days of Christmas" in the parade.

I liked it!

I'm not rushing out to buy his CD and I kind of thought it was a little tacky to sell them right in the middle of the parade...but it was still fun and something different.

I don't see any difference between the rapper and the cloggers who clogged to "Two-Step around the Christmas tree". (The cloggers are actually my personal favorite... another really fun addition to the parade!)

I love the parade!

I think we need to teach our children tradition, especially during the Holidays. Changing the lyrics is my problem! I dont care to have my 4 yr. old think thats how the song goes!

None of the comments suggested racism... So where did that come from?

It may be simple to say If you dont like it dont listen! In my car I can change the station, Its not that simple in a public place.

My older children watch and listen to things that I dont want my 4yr. old exposed to. I thought Christmas was for kids!

-- Posted by Disgusted on Wed, Dec 12, 2007, at 11:38 AM

My family and I laughed and chuckled at the Rapper, as we thought the song(s) were funny. We don't like rap, but it wasn't offensive. There weren't any cuss words; therefore, we did not cover our son's ears. I don't think it was appropriate to be selling their CD though.

Obviously, by the look of the rapper's float, he/they put A LOT of time and money into it, as it was one of the most decorated floats in the parade (IMO).

If someone wants to set up in the parade, and they have the means and the heart to entertain others, then they should be allowed.

This particular artist had a great gift, and I thought he displayed it well and respectfully.

My daughter is grown and gone from home now, but it used to drive me crazy to hear rap coming from her room.

However, I did not tolerate any vulgar lyrics, but decided to let her make her own choices about what type of music she wanted to listen to. After all my parents were not so happy with some of the "Acid Rock" or Heavy Metal" I used to really enjoy back in the day.

Folks a little older than me heard their parents complaining about Elvis and The Beatles.

I have to agree that if the lyrics weren't vulgar, then let them do their thing. Some folks are gonna like it and some ain't. Isn't it great to live in a free country...At least for the time being.

I really enjoyed this year's parade. I thought it was refreshing to see new and different things included in the parade, with a lot of the different cultures represented in our community.

But don't try to ban something for others just because you don't prefer it.

So as long as we all agree that the riders shouldnt drink and the crowd shouldnt act up all is well!

Theres a big differance in banning something and stating an opinion. Thats what Blogs are about!

When I hear rap of any kind--no matter what the lyrics--I put my fingers in my ears.

-- Posted by neena on Thu, Dec 13, 2007, at 5:48 AM

If you didn't like it, please make sure the Christmas Parade Committee has your phone number so they can call and get all the floats approved next year.

-- Posted by Jacks4me on Thu, Dec 13, 2007, at 10:08 AM

I want to say thanks to the T-G for providing this forum for everyone to voice their opinions about the parade, the animal shelter, ebay and anything else you can think of. It's nice to have somewhere like this to vent.

But, I hope that the parade committee takes all this with a grain of salt (except for the safety issues, of course)The parade is a wonderful event for this community. If the committee took every criticism to heart, then the parade would consist of one float with Santa Claus on it and that's it....but eventually someone would complain about that too.

I appreciate the parade, the committee and all those who participate in it.

By the way, Merry Christmas to all!

That's typical. So in other words, just because it has a certain beat, you selectively ignore it. You know, country songs portray many negative situations too, and I love country music. The rapper in this parade had clean and fun entertainment in mind. He is a local Bedford Countian and has every right to be in the parade.

My thoughts, he wasn't drinking and running his float into the crowd, can't say the same for some of the 'country folk' on their horses!

-- Posted by chaney_boy on Fri, Dec 14, 2007, at 3:18 PM

I saw no problem with anything in the parade.

Big Smo had a great float and showed Christmas spirit in his own way with the gift of voice he was born with.

As far as selling his CD at the parade,he sold them at a discount at the parade to show his hometown some thanks. You don't HAVE to buy it!It was just there for those that did..

Big Smo is just a husband and father trying to make a living!

The problem with the parade were the drunk cowboys on the horses!THAT WAS DANGEROUS!!!

Keep up the good work Big Smo!!!

Rap on BigSmo!

-- Posted by devan on Sat, Dec 15, 2007, at 8:00 AM

ok i am a big fan of big smo b/c he has his own style...and thats hard to find. i think him being in the parade is great b/c he is a part of this community just like u and me. there are a lot of issues with this county so why are people so worried about a song in the christmas parade? we need to be worried about the real crimes. smo made fron page of the paper for the same song 2 yrs ago in the parade but wait NOW some people have something to say? why? i think i know the answer to that its b/c no one has respact anymore no one can see someone maybe going to the top and say congratulations or just say nice job. instead its why is he special why can't that be me? well its not you its someone from our community so be happy with that. being envious isn't going to get u anywhere in this world people. so just deal with it... to big smo keep doing what you're doing you have a lot of fans and u already know everyone including me has haters.

-- Posted by smofan on Sat, Dec 15, 2007, at 9:44 AM

big smo, I support your freedom of expression and priviledge to be in the parade since you filled out your forms and did the required things such as make your float and such. I must admit that I am not a fan of rap, as I stated earlier in this blog, but I would defend your right to keep rapping ( as long as it's clean) to the very end.

Perhaps you & your fans have educated some of the folks here about what you do.

Now please allow me to educate you & others on something I do: I train & ride horses. I don't do drugs or use alcohol when I am training or riding. I don't own cows or mess around with cows, so the proper term for someone like me is Horseman, Horsewoman or Horsepeople.

Merry Christmas to all!

William

Oh one more thing I meant to say.

Those nowadays that ride horses and consider themselves Cowboys are usually no more than wannabes.

I do listen to some rap from time to time, Run DMC used to be my fav. when I was younger! I still dont and never will agree with changing the words to a Christmas song. What next, Change the lords prayer??? After all Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus...

I dont like Opera music at all. Does that make me racist or just discriminating? I dont care what race, gender, or sexuality anyone is. Maybe its called, My OPINION!

Same goes, If you dont like it then you dont have to read it!

-- Posted by Disgusted on Sun, Dec 16, 2007, at 9:50 AM

Mr. Melson started this blog and he himself is the one that brought racism into it. I stated days ago that none of the comments suggested racism... So where did that come from?

I have yet to see his reply on that or anything else for that matter...

EXACTLY big smo!!!

Besides nearly every Christams song was written as a secular piece, and the one you sang had nothing to do with Jesus... LOL... some people baffle me.

I give the above comment no credit at all given the fact that it comes from someone that seems to be sacrilegious in the first place. There wouldnt be a Christmas song to destroy if we werent celebrating the birth of Christ! Like my granny always said. You cant argue with a fence post!!!!! Good luck and Merry CHRISTmas to all.

-- Posted by Disgusted on Sun, Dec 16, 2007, at 11:36 AM

BigSmo,

Glad to see you here to bring your side into this.

I liked your float and the entertainment that you brought to the parade. I, however, wish that you would find a different outlet to sell your CDs. I say this for two reasons. Personally, I don't like people yelling at me to buy something. Secondly and most importantly, I'm afraid others will fall in and every Joe who has something to peddle will enter a float into the parade. Before long, it will look less like a parade and more like a walking flea market.

Again BIGSMO, I loved your float and I hope that you continue to be a part of the Shelbyville parade for many years to come.

You actually might sell MORE CDs if you had several strategically placed carts or tables set up along the streets of the parade (such as the balloon carts).

Good luck and I hope to see your float again next year.

LOL. Funny how you think you know someone, when you really don't. If you can't argue with a fence post then quit repsonding dear. It's simple.

What is sacreligiou/secular? SANTA CLAUS? What nation above ALL others teach their children to enjoy toys, clothes, video games, etc EVERY SINGLE Christmas? America... What nation claims to hate the slogan "Happy Holidays" but only uses Christmas to spend time with family and help those in need? Instead of the other 364 days a year?

I enjoy Christmas, and in fact I call it Christmas, but considering this rap song portrayed an Alvin and the Chipmunks song [also secular] not a Silent Night or O Holy Night rendition and you still complain is beyond me. Nobody did anything to you, and according to about 95% of the people speaking on this topic, it wasn't that big of a deal. If only people cared so much about the real issues in life, America wouldn't be considered so hypocritical.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me start off by saying Merry Xmas.

Ok now since that is out the way.

This is not about Big Smo.. This is about Rascism. Little Country Town shelbyville that host the largest Horse Show in the world. That doesn't know anything other than the Boot Scoot Boogie & the Tear in my bear. We call this attack on the CEO and Operator of Yayoda Records "Big Smo" Discrimanation/Rascism/ Slander/Defamation and in a court of law Yayoda Records would be the new Mayor of Shelbyville. So Ladies & Gents, in closing, Don't Knock it if you ain't tried it! lol

Sincerely,

Goose

This blog is a prime example of all the rudeness and misperceptions of everyone. It is discrimination--but it's discrimination or "racism" of everybody against everyone else.

It is also the reason that blogs should be eliminated. They just seem to bring a negative aspect to the our paper and our community. People say things they would not otherwise say.

Merry Christmas-HA! How can any of you say that after all the comments you make?

Ok people lets get back on the parade not the Pop-A-Top. They didn't Have anything to do with the actions of the people that rode in the parade. The horses have been riding thru the building for several years and nothing ever said, but because of the actions of a few of the riders ( in the parade not the Pop-A-Top) some people have become very critical. What if they had rode thru the bar on June 2sd instead of parade night would anyone have said anythng????
