In appreciation of freedom

Posted Friday, December 28, 2007, at 9:51 AM

Be thankful we don't live in a country such as Pakistan where opposition leaders are murdered.

I'd hate to think what America would be like if those opposing leaders weren't tolerated and heard. And I'm unsure how much America needs to keep supporting Pakistan beyond the point necessary to protect ourselves.

Presidential candidates here are at a risk, but nowhere to the extent as in Pakistan. The vast majority of Americans have enough sense to make their points at the polls, accept the outcomes and attempt hoped-for changes without violence.

Honestly, I wonder if we Americans really appreciate our freedom.

Imagine if, for example, we had to endure checkpoints and possible robbery or murder just to travel to, say, Tullahoma.

Imagine if suicide bombers routinely attacked Wal-Mart or local restaurants.

Imagine if you couldn't read this blog or anyone else's opinion except those approved by the government (something I suspect more than a few Americans, unfortunately, would agree with).

We're fortunate to live in the United States.

And let's hope those who have arrived from other countries appreciate, or can learn to appreciate, the freedom they have in America. Even non-citizens are more free here than citizens of many countries.

I agree, so many countries have strict regulation over who is allowed to enter and live there but yet we seem to open the flood gates even after what happened on 9/11. I mean really, our government must be one of the most ignorant bodies of legislation and authority in the world. We can barely take care of the actual citizen who were born and raised here yet we want to take care of everyone else pouring in not knowing where their loyalties and ties are to.

It just boggles my mind . . .

I agree with William , there needs to be more of a control over who comes in from where.

Just my opinion, but if this country keeps allowing people of a certain religion, which has proven itself to have a large number of terrorists to continue to come into this country, then I think it's just a matter of time until we have checkpoints and suicide bombings at Walmart.

I'm not sure why we need ANY immigrants in this country for the time being and not until this nation gets a handle on illegal immigration and terrorism. If that ever does happen.
