Thanking those who serve us

So I'm going into the Kangaroo store (which most people still call The Pantry) on Madison Street at Deery shortly after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

I'm bleary-eyed, half asleep (I'm not a morning person) and getting my supply of work caffeine for the next few days.

The clerk, bright-eyed and wide awake, talks to me and wishes me a good morning/day. I appreciated that. Those warm feelings are exactly what we all need in the early-morning, pre-sunrise hours of a cold winter's day.

We've got quite a few friendly store clerks around Shelbyville, and the good ones make up for the grouchy few such as a woman a few years ago who got tired of working, simply locked up the store and disappeared.

Those who wait on the masses -- convenience store clerks, waitresses, Wal-Mart greeters and others in similar positions -- deserve far more thanks than they get. Too many times I hear, "It's their job, they're supposed to do it," from higher-paid supervisor types who have developed an attitude to go with their authority.

But there's a difference between simply doing it and doing it with a smile and some good words.

Those who put something a little extra into their jobs deserve some thanks in return.

Pride in their work and attitude should be well rewarded for them. Hopefully.

David, you are completely right. I do get rather frustrated at the service that I normally receive when I'm at Wal-Mart. I always make a point of getting hold of the manager on duty (not a "Customer Service Manager") and letting them know when I get a particularly friendly and helpful employee. I don't complain nearly as much as I could, but I ALWAYS make sure I compliment the manager of wherever I am patronizing on an employee that knows the definition of customer service.

When it comes to wait-staff, I'll tip up to the amount of my tab at times for extremely good service. I'm not a very difficult customer, just keep my tea glass from being empty, but when someone goes out of their way I really do appreciate it...and they know it by the time I leave.

On the flip-side, I was at the new Pilot up at 231 and I-24. I went in and paid for fifteen dollars in gas. I went back out to pump and the pump never came on. I walked back in and asked her if she could turn the pump on and her response was a VERY loud and snotty "When you give me some money". I almost lost it. Her manager was standing directly behind her when I asked her "Did you just see me standing in front of your register paying you for gas?" She replied "Yeah". The manager intervened and asked me what the problem was, and I told him that it was the fact that his employee had just popped off with that comment. Not "Sorry, all of our pumps are pre-pay", not "Sir, you have to pay first", but that snide little remark had set me off. The manager stood right there and said "She apologizes, sir" although I had heard nothing of the sort from her. The district manager was in the office at this time and the manager went to get him at my request. I explained what had happened to him and let him know that, although I spend between $75 and a hundred dollars a week on gas just to go back and forth to my office, I would NOT be back in that place. That's the type of customer service that I cannot stand at a place that I am going to patronize.

Ok great blog BUT I must say the chick at Domino's the other night was freakishly happy to the point that it scared me!

I'm always amazed at how happy the people are to be working at Starbucks. There's this one girl at the Starbucks that faces Old Fort Parkway in Murfreesboro that is exceedingly happy (or as LauraSFT puts it "freakishly happy" LOL).

I asked her one night why she was always so happy and she responded with two words:

I have to agree with amori_da_viaggiare, the Starbucks people are too happy.

Actually, there's a waitress I really like at the Huddle House who's always really nice and happy when we go in. I always make sure to leave her a good tip, I'm sure she can't be making much money working there.

That waitress' name is Crystal, my husband and I call her "awesome". If you have met her, you know why. She is so Awesome!! All the time!

The blonde with big hair? She is awesome, at first I wasn't really into her - I think because in CT such friendly waitresses are kind of rare, but now I get disappointed when she's not there.

Shelly, the one that works at night is great too! We walk in and she brings my coffee and my husbands tea ASAP. She says the usual and without fail always gets it right no matter how long its been since we were last there.
