Dr. Phil: True stories?

Posted Monday, March 24, 2008, at 11:03 PM

I've thought that, for the most part, TV's Dr. Phil seems more reasonable than most talk show hosts.

But are his guests being manipulated?

Go to http://timestranscript.canadaeast.com/fr... for a look at how one couple says they were misrepresented.

Any thoughts?

I know that it's just my opinion, but this country is way to enthralled with seeing people disenfranchised or marginalized on TV as a form of "entertainment." Everyone like Phil (I don't think he's a real dr) because he "told it like it is" but sometimes being tactful is more effective. Phil is totally into Phil. When Britany Spears was going through so much turmoil, he went to her hospital and then to the rag mags and then to his TV show to use it for ratings and self-gratification. Please...Make Him Stop. I don't need to watch that kind of entertainment. I don't enjoy Idol because Simon is a creep, I don't enjoy several talk shows because they treat people like crap. What's wrong with being nice? What's wrong with finding out what's going on without humiliating the hell out of everyone? I am astonished at the bloodthirsty public wanting to know every little moment someone is going through when they are having a rough time. Does it make us feel superior that "at least we aren't doing that?" For Heaven's sake, I couldn't stand Jerry Springer and now we have Phil and Simon, GIve it a rest. Let's find someone like Dinah Shore, Mike Douglas or Johnny Carson to allow us a glimpse into glamour without all the sleaze. To give us a chance to see some talented performers without humiliating them when they err. To err is human to forgive -divine. Ahh for the good old days.

cubicalgirl, you may be right, he may be a moron. He's a funny moron in my opinion but in this case his level of intellect is not the issue they're making. It's about the fact that he DOES host a tv show and tv shows, like it or not, depend greatly on ratings. If it's boring people won't watch.

Dr. Phil is a moron. If he really cared about helpingpeople he'd go back to private practice rather than parade people and their problems on TV for ratings.

I was done with him years ago when I saw him on an episode of Oprah. The topic was young children engaging in sexual activity. He basically stood up and told a bunch of young girls on the panel that there were dirty sluts then turned to the boys and gave them a little wink and said, "You know you really shouldn't be doing this kind of stuff..." Nice double standard!

Yea, but ya kinda have to know that when you sign up to do a show like this you're not going to get the opportunity to tell your "I'm an alcoholic but not a jerk" story.

The problem is that the folks on his show didn't have a chance to give their input. If the footage, producers, or Dr. Phil portray their lives inaccurately for entertainment purposes, these people should have the right to state the reality of their situations.

Just because this guy's an alcoholic doesn't mean he is a jerk.

I happen to think Dr. Phil is funny, that being said I'd never put myself in a position to have someone else pick apart my life on national tv.

What I'm hearing out of the article you linked was that he didn't like being portrayed as an alcoholic and she didn't like being portrayed as the girlfriend of an alcoholic....but that's what they are. You don't seek help from a dr to have sugar patted up your butt.

To me Dr.Phil is only out there for the money. I do not waste my time on that show. I feel he needs to get a life and so do some of the people he has on his show. I have only seen him when he has been on the View or the new's.
