Grateful for what we've gotPosted Monday, April 21, 2008, at 1:49 PM
While at Central High School last week on another matter, I noticed how striking the newly-constructed portion looks and the amount of additional work going on. (The parking lot seems like a maze compared with when I was a student there, but that's another story.)
And talk's already ongoing about building a new Community High School at Unionville, just 10 years after the current one was constructed.
I contrasted this over the weekend with stories from Coffee County news media about the conditions of portions of Tullahoma High School.
The THS auditorium was condemned two years ago -- it's unusable at this point -- and the home (concrete) side of Wilkins Stadium, so familiar to area football and track fans, has now been determined to be too deteriorated for use.
Sad, since that stadium was once a showplace with the only purpose-built track in southern Middle Tennessee.
THS may find itself "borrowing" Central High's stadium for one or more home games.
I'm not kicking Tullahoma when it's down at all. It's a fine city with great people.
But I hope those of us in Bedford County aren't taking what we have for granted as far as school facilities. Compared to other cities and counties in much of our surrounding area, we're fortunate.
