Drinkin' and smokin'Posted Monday, July 27, 2009, at 1:52 PM
Some people just can't stay away from their favorite substances.
A customer in front of me at a Shelbyville convenience store Saturday night was attempting to buy a 12-pack of Bud Light without any ID. The clerk flatly refused to sell: "Both of us would get in trouble and believe me, I'd like to sell it to you because I have a budget to meet. But I can't sell it without an ID," he said. Frankly, he appeared to me to already be at least partially intoxicated.
The customer (who had ridden a bicycle to the store) did buy cigarettes, then turned around and asked me to buy the beer for him. I refused. As I left he was approaching another customer about buying, still desperate for his beer.
On Sunday I was on the Griffin Park walking trail as a walker went by me, smoking away. It's good that he's trying to stay in shape, but doesn't smoking partially counteract what he's doing? After all, competitive runners don't puff away as they run.
