Rasslin' gators for fun, profitPosted Monday, March 15, 2010, at 2:03 PM
We've brainstormed at the T-G lately about possible ideas for a community festival celebrating...something. The question is, what?
Shelbyville's probably not ready for this but it would definitely be different. Ever wanted to "wrestle" an alligator? Those in the know claim it's not actually wrestling but more like stunts -- most of the time. I'm not condoning gator wrestling, and frankly I can see where it may not be in the best interest of the animals. But in an area where there are people who would still support cockfighting -- note several homes outside Shelbyville with roosters housed in individual little shelters (those aren't being raised for food, folks...) -- gator fightin' can work. The word celebration brings a different image to mind. Celebrating positive things and I am not sure that alligator fighting "rings my bell".
I would like to see a much bigger celebration of Spring, highlighting area farms, backyard gardens, nurseries, aquaculture. vermiculture, hydroponics, ornamental pond gardens, garden tours, etc.
