Picturing the Past 83: A look at Lane Street

Thanks to a contributor for this undated photo (actually a colorized postcard, apparently) of Lane Street in Shelbyville -- not sure whether this is today's East Lane or West Lane, but I'd guess it's East Lane.

This looks almost like it could be from the intersection of Deery Street and East Lane Street looking, as the caption on the photo reads, west. The northwest side of that intersection, which today is occupied by an office building, had an large, old home known as the Ruth home until the 1970s, set back off the road -- notice what appears to be a large yard at right center.

The old homes along North Main Street continue to disappear. But the area between Madison, Deery and East Lane Streets east of the post office and west of Bryant Street, which is designated as a historic district, retains much of its original look.

Gary, you are right about the codes, but they are not the only ones to blame, how about the industry that brought in all the illegals? To me they are the ones who have played a big part in destroying our city. I wish they had never come here as they concenetrate more or hiring Mexicans and Somalians than local people. I don't think this is right and don't buy their products.

Shelbyville looks like a nice town years ago. what has happened to our city? We used to have nice curbs and sidewalks also Our codes dept. just let our city go to H--- Does any one care to speak out or bury their heads under and hope not to offend someone. Your family will have to live here and clean up our mess

David I agree with you that this picture appears to be at the corner of Deery and East Lane. The reason I say that is that the house in the left of the picture (with the red colorized fence)looks similar to the one that was there in the 40s and 50s, and maybe even later than that.
