I'll stick with those Girl Scout cookiesPosted Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 10:31 AM
From this year's signup sheet for Girl Scout cookies:
"Cookies can be part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle." Yeah! So can candy, ice cream and sweet goodies. I've read locally and nationally over the past few days about several people -- including several chefs -- who are no longer ingesting such things as sugar and processed food. Good luck to them, but it seems like moderation may be the operative word. In other words: Keep what you eat within reason. America's real fitness problem stems from fast foods -- like burgers and biscuits with a day's worth of fat and calories in a few bites -- and the incorrect (at least from my mostly-slim view) thought that foods, homecooked or not, have to be packed with bad stuff to be tasty. Read the T-G's Sunday Life & Leisure section each week and you'll see occasional goodies that taste great and aren't loaded with fat/calories. And I've been eating those Girl Scout cookies -- just a few at a time, with the boxes lasting for a week or so -- for years. Haven't hurt me yet. I love how these diet pill commercials always say that the pounds will magically melt away if you take our pills, "with proper diet and exercise". Heck, with proper diet and exercise we wouldn't need their pills. But people keep buying them...and missing that whole "with proper diet and exercise" bit.
Fat America is a nation breeding off the notion of gullibility. These companies could sell a ketchup popsicle to a women with white gloves. People will completely forgo rationality for a cheap hoax.
Stating the obvious is unfortunately necessary!
That reminds me of one of the Bill Cosby skits were he says that his daughter told him that cake was healthy and that it was good for breakfast because it contains: eggs, flour, water, and chocolate.
You can be healthy and lose weight, and you don't have to have diet pills or join a gym. Just eat in moderation and equally paired food. And you can exercise at home. But you have to use common sense, which some people have forgotten.
