Picturing the Past 141: Riding the riverPosted Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at 12:55 PM
Taking a canoe down Duck River was/is a great way to spend some time. (T-G File Photo)
I guess most Bedford Countians have memories of floating or fishing in the river or even just hanging out or partying along its banks. On this cool (but not really so bad, considering what it could be this time of year) winter's day it makes me wish summer was already here again. Picturing the Past is featured each Tuesday in this blog. Reader contributions are welcome. Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

I think it was 1957 when I got my uncle Ed Huffman to order me a Delcraft aluminum pirogue (flat bottomed canoe made in Louisiana, for swamps) through the Cove Hollow resort store. I don't think I ever saw another canoe on the Duck, at the time. Most people had jon boats on the river, and most of them were wooden. Mine was smaller, much lighter, and more tippy. And people thought I was a dang idjit.
Be that as it may, I still have the boat.
I remember in the early 40's paddling a boat up and down Duck River from far above the dam to below Sims Bridge fishing, exploring. swimming and just having a good time.
Love floasting the Duck, fishing and frog gigging in Bedford County. There's always a bountiful harvest and the river is at it's prettiest at night.
Looks like the bridge at Halls Mill to me.
Is that Dement bridge?
Good to see everyone has a lifevest on.
