Picturing the Past 149: Homecoming 1960Posted Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at 3:38 PM
Part of the 1960 Central High homecoming parade. (T-G file photo)
Is this the homecoming queen? The Monday, Oct. 10 Times-Gazette published only a photo of the winning float, so this photo remained unseen for over 51 years until now - and we don't have an ID on her. But I'll bet someone lets us know soon.
Apparently, from all the negatives found in the envelope with this one, the photographer shot every float in the parade - and walked around the square while doing it. The backgrounds behind the floats are fascinating scenes of all four sides at that time. I'll post more occasionally.
Remember the Waffle Shop? Seems like it was around until at least sometime in the 1970s. And it seems like I remember Henning Jewelers on the east side of the square. Did they move there later. My memories of that side of the square are that Knox Pitts Hardware filled all of the southwest side buildings by the 1970s. Most of the name of the store to the west of Henning's is covered by the door.
Looks like the painters hanging out by the Henning signs had the best view.
The girl's gracing a 1960 Thunderbird (you can tell the model year by metal strips next to the taillights). And bonus points if you know the make of the station wagon parked to the right. (Hint: The fins are similar, but it's NOT a '57 Chevy).
And Shelbyville beat Manchester 27-0 that night in the homecoming game.
