Picturing the Past 160: Sondra Locke on TVPosted Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at 4:15 PM
Sondra Locke on late night TV in 1969. (T-G file photo)
It wasn't Johnny Carson's show. Maybe Joey Bishop or Dick Cavett, who were competing with Johnny in those days. She had just come into her own as a star actress. I remember some people thought she made disparaging remarks about Shelbyville. Interesting, too, that an ash tray is prominent in the photo. Remember when the late night hosts and their guests lit up? Picturing the Past is featured each Tuesday in this blog. Reader contributions are welcome. We were given her old phone # in Haley when we first moved here and used to get her phone calls. I was surprised to find out that we had the phone # number of a movie star.
In interviews, subsequently she has stated that she was from Wartrace, Tn. then Shelbyville, Tn. and finially I heard her say that she was from Nashville, Tn. Apparently, untruths have been a way of life for her or MAYBE she has "outgrown her raisin".
I think she is still married to Gordon.
I thought this would be a good blog to write about since I left the one about Shelbyville Mills and I agree with cookie. She was a couple of years younger and I even got out my Aquila and she was a sophomore to our senior year. Another person mentioned her marriage and even though it's been awhile I always thought she married Gordon Anderson whose brother was our classmate. I don't recall if she married Clint Eastwood (if that's who is being referred to) or if she ever married anyone else. Perhaps someone else would know. As for her acting, it depends on the person and I do recall her playing Rosemary Clooney and she was rather good at that. Wherever she is or what's she's doing now, I just hope she's happy.
Where is Sondra now?
Does anyone remember when Sondra's mom owned 'Stickey's' old place on hwy 41.
Many female stars get their break with who they know. The ones with talent move on to become real stars.
This was not the case with Sondra. She was a little fish in a big pool, and as they say, her candle burned out all too soon.
Wasn't she the "star" of "Our Very Own"?
Go to youtube and check "Sondra Locke Every Which Way but Loose". A very wild video and some wild comments.
She is 68 now. Someone should post that old talk show interview on YouTube.
First let me say her brother is a fine, honest and good man.I think she became corrupt when she moved to Ca.As for harsh words, she did not attend the funeral of her mother. She did send flowers to the funeral home,so she is not all bad.
What has this woman done to have so many be so ugly towards her? This was all before I moved here so I don't know any of the history other than she lived here and married a man that many around here would find objectionable, there really seems to be some animosity, is that she made it big and there is resentment or did she actually do something to cause these attitudes? I have heard she self destructed with her fame, but did she harm the community or people in any direct way or just herself?
btw, that is The Joey Bishop Show.
She is the same age as my brother. 66 years old. I know, they played 'patty cake' behind the old Shelbyville Mills Gym.
To this day I cannot imagine what Clint Eastwood saw in that woman. JMO
Bo wrote a very funny column many years ago, probably in the time frame of this photo, about Sondra and her "age problem". The bottom line was something about how great it was that she was Valedictorian of her class of '62 at age 13!
On a related note, I read her biography a few years ago and found it very interesting. I think it was called "The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly."
Speaking of ashtrays, consider how she is dressed compared to those of today.
That made me laugh out loud cookie. She would probably say that you have gotten three years older.
The newspaper in my city always publishes well known people's birthday daily and Sondra Locke's birthday appears yearly. She was two years younger than me in Central High, but it is really strange now, because she has now become five years younger.
I was speaking of the Dating Game where she made herself look bad.
I think she was on the Dating Game before this T.V. appearance.I remember watching her and she made herself look worse than she could ever make Shelbyville look.
