Picturing the Past 171: Stewart-Potts showroomPosted Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at 4:06 PM
Stewart-Potts Motors' showroom in spring 1978. (T-G file photo)
It's spring 1978, and they're showing one of the last full-size LTDs; 1978 was their last year. My parents had a similar '74 LTD; big bulky cars with weak brakes and fingertip-loose steering. That's very much an old-style showroom compared to the big ones we see today. Look out the far-left big window and you'll see an old car repair shop, where the US Bank parking lot is today, and the back of the Dixie Hotel. Picturing the Past is a regular feature of this blog. The property was recently sold at auction. It is a shame that the bldgs. may be demolished.
I always admired that building...If there were a lot more parking options around it It would make a great Bistro with steaks and burgers and possible a stage music venue...those big windows would allow a dining view both inside and out(can you just imagine)....Shelbyville would not support it tho...a meat and three would not be the option in my idea....."The Filling Station" for a name would be tho....
Who bought the property?
James Farrar bought the property
I saw and then bought my first new car which was on display in this showroom. A 1964 Galaxy 500 390XL. At a bargin price of only about $2400.00. Those were the days.
