Picturing the past 173: Burger Chef in '78Posted Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 9:38 AM
Shelbyville's old Burger Chef, as it appeared in late January 1978. (T-G file photo)
As usual, go here for a larger view.
Recognize anyone in the photo?
Note the briefcase on the table with the kids who I imagine had just gotten out of school. My first thought was "laptop computer." Uh...no. Not for quite a few more years. I'm guessing they were from Harris Middle School since Central High was in its first year in the current building.
Seems like this was in the last days of Burger Chef. I'm thinking that by the early 1980s it had become Burger Ch-i-ef - note the 'i' - and eventually a few other restaurants were in that building, since torn down to make room for the expanded BP store.
Restaurants did a lot of advertising in the Times-Gazette in the late 1970s -- and used photos in the ads, which has left us with quite a few photos of their interiors and exteriors. I've got quite a few of these left to post.
