Ink-stained wretch

Posted Friday, August 24, 2007, at 12:19 PM

For most of my career with the Times-Gazette, until soon after we were sold to Rust Communications, many of us had to go into the back room most afternoons to stuff advertising inserts into the mail newspapers (the carriers stuffed their own papers). When the new owners took over, some things were shifted and the news staff didn't have to do that anymore.

Today, however, they needed extra help stuffing our Celebration Souvenir Edition. The supplements, packed in plastic bags, took up so much room, and several things have been moved around, that we were in quite close quarters. But we got it all done -- it was tiring work, and it leaves your hands gray with ink.

We hope you like the supplement -- a number of people, including editor René Capley and our summer intern Dustin Bowen, worked very hard on it.

Yep,I was a carrier there when David Brannon (sic?) was Circulation Manager and I well remember insert days and hated them! It seems no matter how careful one is to not get ink anywhere except the hands it always seemd to find it's way to my face, arms, legs (if wearing shorts) or clothes.

I really don't miss those days, especially delivering papers on motorcycle in rain or snow.

Thanks for everyone's hard work. I'm looking forward to receiving our very first Celebration Souvenir Edition of the Times-Gazette.
