Letters to Santa

Posted Friday, December 7, 2007, at 9:13 AM

This time of year, the newsroom spends much of our free time (what's that?) typing up Santa letters to be published in the newspaper. They run the gamut -- some make you laugh, some make you angry, some (including some we don't publish) make you want to cry.

I've been processing the e-mailed letters, and I had to pass along this postscript:

P.S. If you're a fake don't tell me. I don't want to know.

I don't either, Sam. I don't either.

I think the letters are a fun thing for the kids. Howerver , there was a miss print with my grandaughters. Her age and what she wanted. It must have gotten mixed up with someone's elses letter. There may be a little boy's letter asking for girly things. LOL Have a merry Christmas all

Generally, letters become unpublishable when they make reference to private or embarrassing family situations which it would be inappropriate for us to publish in this particular context.

Such letters can be written innocently, by the child, or can be "ghost written" on behalf of a child or infant by an adult with an axe to grind.

Sometimes, we can just edit out a sentence or two, but sometimes there's not a good way to work around it.

I am just curious but what kind of letters to santa would not be published? By the way,I too believe in santa! MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

Now I'm an old man but my mother told me when I was a child that when I stopped believing in Santa, he would stop coming to see me. I still believe, he still comes. Now how 'bout that?
