County audits

Posted Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 10:21 PM

In response to a story comment, I posted a followup comment explaining that county government is audited by the state each year, and the results are public record. I thought I'd repeat that information here, for anyone who's interested.

To view the most recent audit of county government, you can go to

You can check the boxes for "county audit" and "local government" and then choose "Bedford" from the drop-down list of counties. Then click the "Search" button and you get a list of local audits. The most recent general audit of county government, which should be the first item on the list, is a 277-page PDF file that you can view online (or download to your computer to peruse at your own pace).

The "audit findings," areas where the auditors say that county policies or practices need to be improved, come near the end of the document, accompanied by responses from the county.

Thank you.

It has been several years since I have looked at our county budgets by departments.
