Comment deletions

Posted Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 11:43 AM

I've had to delete quite a few comments in the past few days. Some were for reasons of profanity -- please feel free to repost, without the offending word -- and others were for potentially-defamatory content.

Our story and blog forums aren't the place to anonymously accuse specific persons of specific illegal behavior. When and if such behavior is brought to light in a more formal setting -- in meetings, court proceedings, or news stories -- legitimate comments can certainly be made in response. But until that point, this isn't the place. Our Terms of Service prohibit defamatory content.

Please report any defamatory comments using the little exclamation-point-in-a-circle logo next to the comment.

I can't help but notice that some of the most profane (and physically threatening) posts are still hanging out there. I assume it's just an oversight, but you might want to take a closer look.

If you find one, report it -- not by posting a message here but by clicking the little yellow circle next to that particular comment. Much of our enforcement is complaint-driven; there's no way that anyone here has the time to read every comment. We need people to report specific comments they find offensive.

That's not to say, of course, that we'll remove every comment flagged; we remove things that are in in violation of our Terms of Service, and sometimes that's different from what one particular person objects to.

I am really surprised and dismayed sometimes at the rudeness of folks. I do not agree with everything some one says but there is no need to be ugly, if you cannot think out a intellegant answer then maybe your IQ is showin' or my dad used to say.

And I'm a tattooed body peirced goth too.. so you'd expect me to be the rude anarchist.

I don't see that little exclamation-point-in-a-circle thingy on every comment. Sometimes its there, sometimes it appears only if I log in.

I know the post you're speaking of, and I agree, it is completely inappropriate and distasteful...and still remains for all to view. Even the author of the post would rather it came down, having already gone back and apologized for the action. Why it still remains is a mystery...but eventually it will die down on its own and become an archive.

I know a post was removed recently because it was said to be derogative or offensive toward native Americans (I never actually saw the post in question but read about the issue later). Wouldn't the same hold true for the slanderous remarks toward the "redneck" population? Are they not an ethnic group of their own, in a manner of speaking...redneck, redskin...what's the difference? (ok, you do realize that this is meant to be humorous to make a point...I am not trying to 'dog' anyone's ethnicity).

I'm just trying to understand what constitutes grounds for comment deletion?

I think all these folks that are so busy tending to everyone else's business need to take a step back and look in the mirror. Some of the "bloggers" do have their own agenda. I know that at least one would like to attempt to draw a rosy picture of himself so as to color his past associations. What criteria does the paper set for one to "Blog"? Does the paper ask if the individual has a general knowledge of the field the blog is to cover or can they be just anyone that would claim to express and opinion? Personally I agree the forum should be open and everyone sign their name. but the problem lies with the individuals with a Blog can say or do just about anything. Make half hearted cowardly attempts to defame by inference rather than by proof. So it is not always us "know-nothings" that need to be deleted. Maybe I am wrong but then again maybe living out on the farm gives one a clear prospective of what's going on inside the dirty little bubble.
