Watch out for pedestrians

Posted Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at 3:10 PM

In general, when people traveling on foot are crossing the street on a clearly marked crosswalk, the law favors them. That's even more true when the crosswalk has a "WALK / DON'T WALK" signal.

Apparently, however, some Bedford County drivers missed that part of their driver handbook.

I was on my way up to the square just now, walking west on Depot Street, when I got to the State Route 82 bypass and pushed the button. I waited for the "WALK" signal. There were several cars beside me on Depot waiting for the green light.

The first car made a right-on-red turn just before the signal changed. That's fine; he was well within his legal rights. But my "WALK" signal started flashing while driver #1 was making his turn, and so driver #2 should have stopped and given me the right of way. He didn't; he apparently had some urgent appointment to bring peace to the Middle East or create cold fusion or what have you.

After driver #2 passed, I stepped into the crosswalk, and driver #3 actually honked at me, as if to say, "What do you think you're doing, crossing the street legally at a clearly-marked pedestrian crossing with a 'WALK' signal?"

I pointed at the signal, and driver #3 just ignored me and made the turn. By that time, of course, the "DON'T WALK" signal had started to flash.

What is it that turns some people to idiots, jerks or both the moment they get behind the wheel?

Another great reason people should have to pass an IQ test prior to be given a license!

Do they actually make Bedford County residents take a drivers test? I figured they must just mail your license to you the day you turn 16.

And what ever happened to turn signals? You know, that little plastic lever that's at the side of the steering wheel.

Did they quit making vehicles with those things?

It isn't just in Shelbyville. I can remember when an employee of the TN Dept. of Rev. was walking to one of the downtown banks (less than 2 blocks from her office) to make a deposit of state funds. A construction truck turned a corner, hit & killed her. She had been in the right-0f-way.

Sorry but I have to agree with Rocket, Bedford County has the worst drivers than any place I have ever lived at. They rarely obey the right of way nor do they use their blinkers 95% of the time. It's funny but I can immediately tell when someone is not a native Bedford County driver. Why? because they actually use blinkers, understand the right of way, and don't pull out in front of you when are you a mere 10 feet away.

Only in Shelbyville, TN can you pour an 8 oz glass of water on North Main or Madison Street and cause a 5 car pile-up! Add a 1/8 inch snowfall and people living within the city limits will call in to work and claim to be "snowed in" (sarcasm intended here) ya'll know that most drivers use the turn signal for hanging decorative items, jewelry and colored rubber wrist bands of all types. Never mind the colorful Hawaiian Leis hanging from the rear view mirrors that block at least 65% of the driver's view of the road.

To Tim Lokey...that is soooo funny, and pretty much the truth of the matter!!! LMAO

Tim you hit the nail on the head LOL .When we first moved here we would joke about the "Tennessee Pass" --- "wait- wait- wait - oh here comes a car towards up we can pass the car now" It seemed like they would never pass till they had something coming towards them head on.

And having learned to drive on winter roads I always get a good giggle when we get light snow and the whole area nearly shuts down.

As for cross walks and pedestrians, bad as it seems here it is actually much better than where I came from. As kids living on a main street, we had the mentality that "they HAVE to stop for us" and even went through a period where we would challenge it, if that were to day we would be road kill - Mom found out and ended that mind set real fast...... ( file that under kids do the damned things chapter I guess)
