Oh, deer!

Posted Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at 7:12 AM

I was driving to work about 6:30 this morning when I saw something run into the the four-lane part of Jefferson Street in the distance ahead of me. I saw one deer, then two. I was watching them run off to the west, towards the river, and almost missed seeing three more run into the road. I had to hit my brakes to keep from hitting them.

I can't recall that I've ever seen that many deer together within the city before. It was about where one turns off to go to East Side School.

Did anyone else see them?

There are deer, wild turkeys and even a fox that hang out on the Tony Rice Center property. The turkeys have also been seen up near the bowling alley.

Just spotted 5 in a field off Pinkston this evening. They stopped going through my field since we got the border collie. They're not fond of being herded.

They've had the area dogs in a tizzy but I don't think any pups have been loose to harass them.

Judging by the bark brigade,I think they have stuck to the wooded areas along the creek beds when they come into our area.

They made have decided it was safer in town than out where hunters can get them right now.

We are used to seeing them, (had three in the yard this morning) but a herd came by while I was on the tractor this weekend and came close as if they were not concerned.

They were right not to be since we made a pact when we first moved in. They don't bother my garden and I don't let hunters on our property.

Strange, but it has worked. They graze all around the front yard but except for the very first year, I never saw them or their hoof prints in the garden.

There's a doe (we think pregnant) running around the Hickory/Collier/Kingwood areas. She's been here since before Halloween.
