Popcorn button

Posted Friday, March 23, 2012, at 9:59 AM

I am amused by the little battle ... er, difference of opinion ... between the people who make microwave popcorn and the people who make microwave ovens.

The people who make microwave ovens continue to put a one-touch "popcorn button" on their control panel, supposedly giving you the perfect settings for a bag of popcorn. But the people who make popcorn continue to tell you, right on the packaging, "DO NOT USE POPCORN BUTTON." They want you to count seconds between pops once the popping starts to slow down.

I tend to side with the microwave oven people on this one. I've used the popcorn button on several different microwaves and it generally works pretty well for me. On the other hand, I usually stay in the room with the popcorn just in case there's trouble.

You also have to note that in some cases, the popcorn button has more than one setting -- on my home microwave oven, you press it once for a normal, full-size 3.5 ounce bag but twice for one of those smaller single-serving bags you sometimes find in vending machines. Some ovens even have a third setting for 3.25-ounce bags.

There's nothing worse than a stinky bag of burnt popcorn, especially in an office where everyone immediately wants to know who burned it. But I think the popcorn button actually helps guard against burning.

My wife cheats and has a year membership to a movie theater in Murfreesboro. We rarely pop any at home anymore.

Of course tat means she has to come up with a reason to run to Murfreesboro. Does the local theater do that?

We rarely use microwave popcorn, we prefer the kernels popped in an air popper. But when we have used microwave popcorn, we never use the button. We always type in the numbers due to the experience of burnt popcorn by using the button. We have found, depending on the brand, most popcorns pop perfectly between 2:45 and 3 minutes. But again, it mainly depends on the brand.
