Spared once, not twice

Posted Friday, July 20, 2012, at 10:47 AM

This, which I found out about through a posting by Roger Ebert, has to be the most bizarre aspect of last night's tragedy.

Jessica Ghawi, who blogged about hockey under the name Jessica Redfield, was in the Eaton Center mall in Toronto, Ontario, last month. A last-second decision to eat hamburger instead of sushi meant that she wasn't present when a gunman opened fire in the food court. She blogged about that experience here.

Then, having miraculously survived a great tragedy in June, she fell prey to one in July, having been killed in last night's shooting at the theater in Colorado.

Her fate was not to be denied, but so many others shared it and the heinous nature of it all makes me ashamed of what I would like to see done to this person.

Each and everyday we walk out into the world and we will always be asking, God, about that free will thing, is it working.

Without free will, we could not experience nor give true love. Not for our parents, our spouses, our children, nor our God. Unfortunately it is that same free will that allows hate and evil into the world as well.Kiss your children tonight, and pray for the whole of humanity. I fear it is getting worse.
