Two interesting things

Posted Monday, September 17, 2007, at 4:44 PM

A few months ago we were having a family pow-wow

when my brother in law Brought up a "getting to know you" exercise that he had to do in a meeting. The jist of it was, tell everyone two interesting and unusual things about yourself. I thought it was a cool conversation starter. So, we are going to do just that today!

I will go first-

In October of 2003, I flew to Chicago with my grandmother and two friends to go to the Oprah Show.

When we finished the long process of just getting into the studio, we were asked to be seat fillers. First, they sat us on the floor right in front of the stage. Then they moved my friend and me to the top row right at the place where Oprah used to enter the stage. You know where everyone stands with their hands our hoping that Oprah will touch them. After that, they put us back on the front row. We sat right behind the guests. While the show wasn't that good that day, it was about people overcoming obstacles in their lives, it was exciting to see my chin, nose, and earrings on television when the show aired.

Two weeks after the Sept. 11 tragedy, I flew to London, England.

I cried all the way from Toronto to Heathrow airport. I thought I was going to be one of the next terrorist victims. I have to admit, when we were getting ready to come back home, I felt like my life was over since just about ever airport personnel was middle eastern. Not only that, but sitting a few rows behind us were two men in turbans and robes.

I was so afraid that I downed an airplane bottle of Jack Daniels. Normally, I do not like Jack Daniels and I normally have a bit more respect for my grandmother. In that event, all bets were off.

I did think it was a little funny that my grandmother told me that only hussies drink before 10 am.

I did not care.

No fun adventure stories but here goes a couple fun facts.

When I was probably about 6 years old I distinctively remember riding in the truck with my Papa (my dad's dad) to feed the cows. I was biting on my fingernails when he looked at me and said "doolang" (that is what he called me), "if you keep chewing on your finger nails you're going to get worms". I believed him, I have not bitten them since and I will tell everyone I see doing it that they are going to get worms.

One more thing...When I was 8 I was riding on the handle bars of a bicycle that was being driven by a good friend of mine. I told her "Lynna, go faster!!!" she said "I can't you have to move your feet". Long story short, I did, and she did. The spokes on the wheel cut my pinky toe right off. They had to sew and staple it back on!!!
